libavcodec.dll causing problems

I have very recently been experiencing problems accessing my E drive (slave on IDE0). Whenever i open it with Explorer it crashes, shows an error message and relauches Explorer. I checked services event log and the faulting application was Explorer and the faulting module was libavcodec.dll.

I proceeded to copy the same dll from other machine and still had the same problem. If i delete the file i can access E drive without this problem occurring but then i cant play a lot of avi,s saved on my hard drive?

I thought it might have been due to libavcodec being corrupted but since problem still seems to persist even after copying it from a working pc, i doubt that is the root cause.

Any thoughts? I would much appreciate it.

BTW running XP HE sp1

Perhaps upgrading (:rolleyes2) to Media Player 9 will help.

You might try the Nimo Codec Pack. It solves a lot of that sort of weirdness.

    Good luck!

This is just a thought but do you have any .avi's in the root of your E:\ Drive. If you do move them into a folder and try to access it again. May be something in the root its trying to preview when you open explorer that is corrupt.

    Using Media Player 9.
    Also have Nimo codec pack.
The only files in E drive root are Real Media files.

Thing is i cant believe both pc's would have the same corruption on the dll file.

Try getting the Kazaa Lite Codec pack and trying that. Also just try moving the files out of the root. Cant hurt to try.

Try renaming libavcodec.dll to something else (like libavcodec.dl_).

This would force a download of a new codec with a (hopefully!) functioning version. If it doesn't work, just rename it back to the original file name.

    Worth a shot.

files moved out of root. libcodec.dll renamed. Explorer not crashing until i try and play an avi then WMP9 and Explorer crash. Think i'll just re-install all av codecs and see what happens.

Ok, are we talking about Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer??? Second, ISPs are starting to port block P2P media sharing.... So, you might want to look at error details and see what the dll is crashing against-- ie what the other errors are that pop up when you tell the blue screen to continue, possibly after 30-45 seconds of no obvious activity....

Erm,:scratch::scratch: I think we worked out it was Windows Explorer as he was going to his E:\ drive. Second, He's not mentioned it blue screening just explorer crashing and kicking in again. Third, What would ISP's blocking p2p media sharing have anything to do with his explorer crashing when he connects to his E:\ drive . I think you should take you time and read the posts again carefully.

    I had the same problem.
I fixed it uninstalling ffdshow, which is, after all, totally useless if you have good updated codecs.
