For a skit, two friends of mine want to take bits of three songs and stitch them together into one song file. What kind of software would you recommend for this?
I have a mac. I'll (mostly) remain silent. But we produce a podcast and when it's their turn to do some editing they use audacity. Also depending on what it is your putting together another indispensable program we use is called The Levelator (for both OS X and Windows).

It lets you edit strings of sound the way you would edit text. Highlight segments and cut-and-paste them around, then export as WAV, MP3, or OogVobis.

Nope, you had it right the first time!
