Why do the companies even bother with doing the whole crapware customization thing on these types of handsets?

The target market right now for Android phones is the enthusiast, not Joe User who takes whatever's on the phone when it's shipped.

An enthusiast will scour the message boards to find the root exploit and immediately trash all of the crapware in favor of the 'real stuff'.

It seems like this device is merely an attempt at a half-hearted effort to say "Yep! We have an Android phone. But look at how much better the iPhone is"

Certainly AT&T wouldn't want to piss off Steve, now would they?

Alex: Oddly, I can't think of anyone I know who owns an iPhone and hasn't jailbroken it and installed all the neat standard stuff in Cydia and done some customization, though.

Once you cross the river and do Cydia/customization, the iPhone becomes a much better device, doubly better when you leave AT&T behind.

The other day I was using it sorta like a MiFi (albeit a bit slower than one), and it was a beautiful thing. You realize very quickly how much BS AT&T and Apple have created for us to hobble an otherwise perfectly good platform.
