SquareEnix's Tetsuya Nomura hints of "amazing game announcement" to come

But the summary is, Tetsuya Nomura (character creator for Final Fantasy VII and many more) hints that a highly requested game will be formerly announced at an upcoming game trade show (E3, Tokyo Game Show, etc). Now fans are drooling over a FF7 remake, or perhaps Chrono Trigger and Xenogears upgrades. Who knows? But here's my thoughts:
One of the people that commented on the N4G article, reintype, listed 10 possible game series that this could be for. These games included Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Kingdom Hearts, and... Final Fantasy VII. Of all the fans, he has the best outlook on this, 1 being not likely and 10 being most likely in my eyes.
I personally would be happy with a new game/sequel to any of the games reintype listed. They all would have promise, each in their own regard, and have a place in the hearts of fans of each respective game.
As for me, the top three games I personally would like to see...
#3: Chrono Trigger remake or sequel
I would love to see a new addition to the CT lineup. One of my favorite games of all time. However having said that, I also would be happy if the games were left as-is. Like most people, I have warm fuzzy feelings for CT and a remake probably wouldn't do much for me. If anything, they would likely botch it. Not to say that the sequel (Chrono Cross) botched, but it certainly was not what fans were asking for. In its own right, I loved CC. It was just... unexpected.
#2: Xenogears remake.
Xenogears was one of the more mature, deep-thinking games I've ever played. Hell, when I played it as a kid, most of the deeper plot points went right over my head (read: anything past the change to Disc 2). I think a re-make would do a world of good for the classic Xenogears. A graphical overhaul would do a world of good: character sprites often became horribly pixelated when zoomed, 3D worlds were at times a bit crude, and story elements were riddled with confusing plot holes and some poor translation errors. If they did it right, the game would be beautiful.
#1. I admit, Final Fantasy 7 Remake would be the most likely candidate, based on the hints. Why? We all KNOW Kingdom Hearts III is coming. It's going to happen. We don't know exactly when (or even what year), but it's coming. We DON'T know if a FF7 remake is on its way though (at least, not with any certainty). Financially, it makes perfect sense for Square to make a remake - if done well, it would make buckets of cash. And if not, people will still buy it, whine, and still come back for more.
Personally, I'd like to see them remake 7. The game was nice as is and everything, but the world they created was very intriguing to me - and I was left not getting enough of it. In ways, I was sad they used pre-rendered graphics. I wanted the ability to look around and explore the beauty of the game's world. And I think a fully polygonal 3D world in a remake would give me what I wanted all along: an immersive experience in the FF7 world. To look up at will to see Shinra tower looming over the slums, or to explore the Golden Saucer in all its shiny glory. Plus, I could do without the classic's "Popeye" style arms all the characters had.
As for how to remake it story-wise, I think it should be a "95% accurate" remake. They should have the liberty to change some things. I'm sure there were some elements they had to dumb down due to hardware or development time limitations. Perhaps more Chocobo Racing courses, more side-quests. Things they always wanted in the game, that they couldn't fit in. Keep the story the same, but have room for additions.
But alas, don't get your hopes up. Perhaps it's only a sequel to Super Nintendo "classic", Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest.
I would laugh. Hard.

I liked Mystic Quest. The "enemies show damage" and "enemies attacks change depend on how much they're damaged" elements in the battle system are things that should be in every RPG. The game was fun.
Here's a wild idea: Bahamut Lagoon remake. I loved that game and have never played another like it.

When you say Chrono Trigger remake, are you referring to the one on the PSOne and the DS where they had added CGI sequences and a few new side-missions?
If so, those are nice, but it's not like taking it and putting it on a current-gen console with a full overhaul.
Then again, I really don't know if I want that. I kind of like it as-is. Otherwise we might get something like Blue Dragon. Which was an... alright game. But it shows me that I liked the sprites - not sure if I would like 3D Akiro characters.
Not sure if they completely sold their rights of Xenogears to Namco, but it would make sense with them continuing the story with the Xenosaga games. And even then the "saga" games left something to be desired.
Actually, I too enjoyed Mystic Quest. Or at least, what I played of it (got about halfway through). Still, it seems to be the most hated of all the games by Final Fantasy fanboys. I don't really get it, but every time it gets mentioned, fanboys crucify it and state it doesn't exist to them. What a shame.
Actually, that would be pretty cool. I played a little bit of that game before the translation patch was completed (it was only like 20% done, enough for half of the menus) and was totally lost. But it still seemed like a very intriguing game. I'll have to go back and try it now that the patch is done (or at least, I think it's completed by now. It's been years).
Awesome to hear. I just picked that up recently during the Black Friday sales. My friends all love it as well. What they're a little jealous is the fact I got it new for $7. But then again, they've all had the chance to play it by now, so it's all evened out.
Either way, the game is acclaimed for its witty and stylish sense of humor. I'm looking forward to playing it soon.

I would love a FF7 remake. I feel a bit skeptical, as Square has been milking that franchise a bit over the last few years. I guess FF7 remake would be the icing on the cake, and the way to finally put it all to rest. Ah, what do I care. I loved FF7, I'd gladly play a fresh release of it.
Chrono Break. PLEASE.
Walking home late at night, you notice a pale blue glow suddenly emanate from behind a group of trees. You walk over to investigate, but the light fades before you arrive to witness the source. Instead, you notice a small, scorched piece of paper laying on the grass below you. It's a print-out from a New York Times online article, about what will known throughout gaming history as the "Chrono Break Incident".
December 15th, 2014
Headline: "Disgruntled fans bomb video game headquarters"
Copy summary: Disgruntled fans of cult pop video game Chono Trigger bombed the Square-Enix headquarters building, after an outcry against the recent sequel Chrono Break. What began as a rally on online community website 4chan.org became an overnight takeover of the building. The detonation was heard throughout the entire city, up to 20 miles away. What caused the uproar: the sequel did away with the traditional gameplay, story elements and characters of the original game and introduced pre-existing characters from Square's Final Fantasy games, such as Final Fantasy X and XII. No one was harmed in the bombing, however future games from Square-Enix have been delayed indefinitely.
Oh snap. Now I have to post this image. Because Chrono Break will be filled with all of this if Nomura has anything to do with the character design direction.
Presenting...
Kuja.
He wears a lavender gown, practically has swan feathers for hair, and... is that a leather codpiece?
Absolutely. Kefka was more of a devious, insane court jester (officially he was the Emperor Gestahl's Court Mage, which is close enough). He was flamboyant, yes, but that is a natural state for such a role. Effeminate, however, Kefka was not. At least, I never got that impression in the least while playing FFVI.
He reminded more of an even more sinister version of the Joker from the Batman animated series. While they both are gleefully happy to poison water supplies, only Kefka was able to become godly in power.
Besides, I don't think "effeminate" would ever cross my mind if this shadowy figure began to lumber towards me. More like "hide me mommy, he's coming to rape my soul...!"
Now, if they were to completely re imagine the story, set it in an alternate timeline or something? Now that would sell PS3's. I could see that working. Perhaps in their final battle all that mako energy causes a rift in the space time continuum and bang, whole new story based on similar characters and universe. That I could see, but a straight remake, what value would it really add to an already amazing experience?
I see your point, Cliff. But honestly, with all the hardcore detail-oriented FF7 fanboys (and girls) out there, I think they would cry for blood if Square-Enix changed the story. Personally, an alternate reality FF7 would be pretty bitchin', but the fact of the matter is that Square-Enix would have to contend with rabid purists that would feel alienated and betrayed.
And while many may disagree with me, I think the hardware upgrade would improve the storytelling of FFVII. With fully explorable 3D environments, I think it would make for a whole new, fresh experience - even if we all already know what happens to Aeris.
Even if just the visuals were redone, it would be compelling if they maxed out the potential of the PS3. I remember being amazed at the visuals the first time that I played it (the seamless transitions from FMV to the game engine are still pretty cool), and it'd be awesome to replicate that experience.
FF7 is the most beloved FF of all time. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of devoted HARDCORE fans of the game. A remake would be like writing a blank check to SquareEnix.
Easily. Especially if they really cash in on the hardcore FFVII fans. Picture the following:
$60: Final Fantasy VII Revisited
Contains: Blu-Ray PS3 game on 1 disc
$100: Final Fantasy VII Revisited Collector's Edition
Contains: Blu-Ray PS3 game, Collector's "Making of the Fantasy" Blu-Ray video disc, promotional code for Final Fantasy VII: Indigo Lake beta
$225: Final Fantasy VII Revisited Ultima Edition
Contains: Blu-Ray PS3 game, Collector's "Making of the Fantasy" Blu-Ray video disc, Music of Final Fantasy VII Revisted collector's audio 5-CD collection, promotional code for Final Fantasy VII: Indigo Lake beta, large Collector's Tin, cloth map of the FFVII world, replica of Aeris' White Materia OR replica of Sephiroth's Black Materia (random draw, 80% receive white, 20% receive black), pewter figurines of Cloud, Aeris, and Sephiroth.
Estimated revenue: $300 million worldwide
I'm a business major with a passion for games. What can I say?
I agree, it would do well. Still, the point of playing a massive roll playing game is to reveal the story one little bit at a time. If you have already, whats really the point in going back shot for shot, line for line? I remember playing Final Fantasy 7 and I am in the camp that says its one of the finest games ever made, and generally speaking, I don't care for RPG's. The games hook for me was not the leveling system, it was not the graphics from the FMV cut scenes, it was not the boss battles, the hook for me was "what is going to happen next?" The world and characters were so rich, and the story so complex. I know people would buy into it if they left it as is with some modern technical updates, people will want it again. I also see some purists flipping a lid if they change it up, but as long as Cloud, Tifa, and Barett are all fighting Separoth in some amazing fashion, people will get over it, and perhaps even learn to love it on its own merit, and its an opportunity to re invent the franchise, make something original.
Look at Zelda through the years, every game is a re imagining of the franchise that tells different, disconnected story's with the same hero. It's Link, its Hyrule, and it does not matter if you ride on a horse, float on a boat, or roll on the rails, at the end of the day the Zelda fans still eat it up. I think its that continual re invention of the series is has kept it so successful with fans.
I'm not saying nobody would buy a straight remake, I'm just saying Square can deliver a better experience by creating an original experience in the FF7 universe. Yoichi Wada said a couple years back that a remake was not something that they were considering. I agree that the demand is there, but I think partly due to pride, and partly due to artistic ambitions it will be something other than a straight remake and it will likely be amazing.

Exactly. I enjoy re-living the characters and the world. The gameplay is usually fun if I'm re-playing it all. And quite frankly, I always understand more of the story with each play-through (and trust me, my first go through FFVII left me rather puzzled).
This is 4chan we're talking about. The whole thing could be one massive troll circle-jerk. Hivemind only works if some of the people in said hive are serious. You can never trust a 4channer to be serious.
HEY. Fanwanking is seryous biznes.
Obviously, if people really wanted a FF7 remake, someone would have made one by now.
