    try removing the -forceasm flag?
which version of the client are you using?

Well, unless your ISP is proxying port 8080 all the sudden, or you are a Comcast or AT&T Broadband customer, no one answer. If either of those, you might have been in an area where comcast was working cutting in AT&T Broadband folks and you could have gotten bad downloads. when they rework an area to do this, they are working with a LOT of routing gear, things FTP can go wonky for a while and then even back out, as they dynamicly route on Comcast, and AT&T Broadband used a mix. This can happen if route gets tuned in mid-FTP, patial packets result, and client is basicly yelling about the WU startup packet looking corrupt. OLD client, 3.24 or 3.25 with new Core subrelease might do this too, see if you get a Gromacs copyright with a client version older than 4.0 and then DO upgrade if so as version 4.0 client final verison is in downloads area and latest Client goes with latest core release (which you DO have). Second, when you get new client, rerun config, use same user name, same machine number, same team, it will rewrite some files. Try those two things if you have not done them, as other than this the most common cause I saw in Folding's forums and other team's forums was OCing too much for client to get the decompression to work right.

Basicly its saying checksum in WU signature and result do not compute. The WU decompression into RAM failed, so RAM timings could be out of sync with CPU if you are OCing. RAM could be running hotter than good also.

John-- who tried to give you this in probablility order.

    Bad WUs or bad computer.
    Overclocked?
When was the last time you ran memtest?
The only time that I had this was when I had some memory go toast. At first it would run 50%, then 20% then one frame, then it wouldn't even start them.
Other than that I have only had one or two flakey WUs over the years.

Yeah, given client 4.01, unless CORE_78 download was bad, is probably timings, RAM, or WU FTP bad. Easiest first step would be to delete Core_78 file with cliejnt not running, restart client, it will grab a new core. I had to grab a new core once after upgrade when I was having issues of different kinds, but replacing core worked-- in your case, Core is doing decompression, passing error to client, which sticks error in log. V3 is just version three of the decompression algorithm. WUs come archived, core is trying to get them unarchived (kinda like unzipping a zip file download).

    got new FAH_Core78.exe...

cpu is overclocked but this is first time this has happened since i got the cpu...i havent changed any puter setting in 3-4wks. i just noticed it in EM3, 7 straight WU's had problems...so i checked the FAH log and found this...the WU i got now seems to be running fine. ive run memtest with no errors...its PC3200 running at 180fsb so i doubt its the ram. cpu temp is 41C (diode)...i'll keep an eye on it

FatCat i have experienced the exact same problem.. it had nothing to do with my ISP whatsoever.

I remedied it by reformatting computer... right after that even with O/Ced speeds the FILE_IO_ERRORS went away

    hope this helps.

Is your HDD ok? Enough space? Memory ok? (Gotcha prime;))

Are there locked PCI buses on the KD7(I assume its the one in your sig)

I searched the community and there is no definite answer from anyone. No one knows exactly why this happens. A lot of them occured with p1006 and at the end of the WU when its putting it all back together and finds something is wrong so it thros the WU out.

Could always try deleting the core or client. Get rid of the Work folder when you have finished one as well.

where doesn client 4.01 come from?

anyway ...have you tried without -forcesse?
  • edited January 2004
It looks to me like you just got 2 bad WU's in a row, probably from the same server. I have very rarely seen this, but I have seen this happen before. It's happening when the client is trying to decompress the WU before it actually starts working on it, so your computer is not being stressed at that moment. From your log you posted, you can't see which server the first WU that puked came from, but the second WU that puked definitely came from a different server than the third one did, which decompressed normally.

FatCat - :aol: I had something like that going on with one of my boxes and I pulled the hard drive with XP Pro, put in a new hard drive with Win 2000, bought new memory, and finally got to the problem. Bought a new Nic card for $12.99 and it works like a charm. :Rocker: Any body want to buy some used memory :rarr: Jack

I get this same thing with my #3 client (dual HT Xeons) I reformatted and did a new install. I have plenty of disk space. I never got this untill I updated from 3.24, I think it was... I have tried to remove the flags but get no change. What I have noticed is that if I let it go it will do exactually the same as you posted about 3 times then it will finally go... I have decided to just ignore it until it either crashes my computer, won't ever start folding a protien, or is costing me major points...

I think you are right. I think that there is a server that is giving bad WU's.
As I posted above, my other 3 clients are working just fine. It's only one out of the 4 I have going that does it and it doesn't happen all of the time but most of the time... As you suggested when it does get a good WU it starts and works just fine, as good as the other 3 at least...

    mudd...
i got this 7 WU's in a row...then it did one fine...then got it 4 more times...now i got a WU that is going fine..

sorry..its 4.00...EM3 reports it as 4.01 in the queue.dat file info screen

well i lowered the FSB down to 175fsb to see if that helps..that gives me 35/70 pci/agp bus

if its a server giving bad WU's here is the entire log...(WARNING VERY LONG!!!)

i appreciate it mmonnin...HD should be good to go, gb's of space etc..everything else im using it for works fine...

guess we will just wait for now, at least im not losing WU's at 99/100 ;)

try disabling -forcesse ...works for me.

Yeah a lot of those guys got this error AFTER the WU has finished so they lost all the time they worked on it.

and let me run a marathon with 1 leg cut off....
u can still run the marathon...but u wont be fast.

so u were also getting this unique error csimon?..the thing that interests me is it error outs before even using cpu processes...

    BAD WU

    GOOD WU

the bold part is the key area...decompressing error...i dont know how much cpu power that takes...but i doubt its as much as when a grom is crunching. which would eliminate overclocking or memory as the culprit...it could be the HD...but if multiple people are getting this error, i doubt everyones HD went bad...

i wish i knew what WU it was trying to decompress...that might shine some light

I bet that decompression takes more memory than folding does tho.

where does it tell me the WU that failed to decompress???

it gives me the Project on a WU that decompresses fine...

whenever a WU does not decompress correctly..it reconnects to the server for a new WU

    so... :nudge:

    Got me.;)

Dont know but is EM3 quick enough to catch it? Prolly not since it never decompressed correctly.

here they are...the current is the one I'm folding right now...all the bad WU's were 921 or 922

talk about bringing a thread back from the dead...

i found the problem to why i was getting these errors...

norton personal firewall 2003 was causing a corruption in the WU download...

2002/2004 did not cause the same problem...

just wanted to let those who needed to know, know.

Thanks, one more thing to remember about why NOT to use Norton Personal Firewall and tell folks to use Sygate or Tiny instead. If you used it as part of Norton Internet Security, that set of apps might have done this, but a FireWall app alone should not corrupt that(prevent download maybe, corrupt while allowing download, no). Another bug they stomped with NPF 2004, hopefully.
