I need help with my external hard drive

Okay, My dad bought a Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition.
I bought the HP dvd 556s 8x External Slim Multiformat DVD writer.
When I plug that into the notebook, and put the CD that came with the DVD writer, it gives me a blue screen, STOP Error.

It says:
*** Stop: 0x0000008E ( 0xC0000005, 0x805C095E, 0xA9b42970, 0X00000000)

I have no idea what to do. Help??

    Rachel, have you tried the external drive with another CD or DVD?
    Is the external drive seen in Windows Explorer (My Computer)?

    Please let us know. I'm thinking though, that your netbook may not have the necessary power to properly operate your external drive. But let's try a couple other things, first.
