Radiator dilema

I got a new case and some water cooling supplies and was planning on mounting the rad on the outside of the 120mm hole on the rear of the case. The rad will not fit there as it would block access to the video card plug and the power plug of my PSU. I am now faced with mounting the rad in a different location or getting a different one. I DO NOT want to cut a hole in the top of my case and am considering putting bigger feet on the case and mounting the rad on the floor of the case or just getting a different rad. I have the D-Tek Pro-Core Combo and am considering using the D-Tek JR-120 Hi Performance Radiator w/ shroud or the Black Ice Xtreme ionstead (both will fit on or inside the rear 120mm hole).

    What case is that?
    /End OT/

You thought about a separate unit for the radiator, something like a Koolance Exos maybe?

I'd suggest the Black Ice Extreme as it's small enough to fit inside which would make the whole project considerably simpler.

Bottom front? any room there? putting 120mm fans on both sides of the rad push/pull will still bring plenty of air into the system, looks like you have 2 80 mms there now (?)

    It is the
AMS CF-1009. I got mine from Newegg and have removed the stock fan grills with a dremel already (just need to do a little touch up yet). Even at $150.00 these cases are totally awesome! Well built and you couldn't find a shrp edge or cut yourself if you tried!!!

Bottom front is out as the drive cage is there and will be well populated in addition to needing to do some extensive modding to the front as it is set-up with (2) 80mm fans on the front face and the front will also need more holes. I am trying to keep from modding the front face.

    mtgoat,

if you do decide to get the more compact rad & shroud and you want to sell the other please let me know as I'll take it off your hands ;)

    Regards

    Jim

Do you really need all that space in the front bottom Larry? How many drives and Atapi's do you use?

    Mac,
There are 2 things in play here.

    1. I have 5 HD's I want to use in there. (the cage holds 7 and even if I put 2 in the floppy cage I will still have 3 HD's left over)

    2. The cage has no real support without the bottom attached.

Is there that much of a difference between the D-Tek Pro-Core and the D-Tek JR-120???

Is there anything wrong with mounting the rad on the floor of the case???

The only problem I can see there would be with the rad interfering with your PCI cards but if it doesn't, as long as the case is about 1/3rd the diameter of the fan above the surface it's setting upon there should be no problems.

Assuming you want to bring air INTO the case from the bottom (sending hot air out/thru the rad makes no sense, right?) the only thing you have to watch is dust and crud buildup in the underside of the rad, will require frequent cleaning.

Well, one wild idea for that particular case.... do you have a redundant PSU, or can rad go inside case horizontally at top of case??? Can you leave top 5-1/4" bay or top two empty and make this work??? Less dust, dust falls....

    John.

Larry, If you mount a 120X38mm fan on the outside of that hole on the back of the case and then mount the radiator and shroud to it, that would still interfere with the psu and monitor cords? Look at the pic I'm posting to see what I'm talking about for mounting it. You will have to excuse my I33t paint skilz though; I'm no artist.;D

It's a thoroughly bad idea to put the radiator at the top of a case that size.

Gravity will screw you over hard.

Larry what's going on with your wc project?

I borrowed this pic from the swiftechs front page ...it has the fans mounted on the outside of case and rads mounted inside. Looks like a good concept but what do I know I'm still on air.

I think his radiator is quite a bit wider than the Swifty radiator, Chris. He'll probably be better off mounting it externally like in my crappy diagram.

On Friday I was in contact with D-Tek and they are going to echange my radiator with no restock penalty. I thought I was going to make it with the method illustrated by muddocktor but the barbs on the the radiator were too close to my PSU in one position and aimed right at my vid card if I turned it upside down. It was also going to need some exrta support hanging that far out from my case. I re-measured with the new specs of the JR120 and it will work very nicely with the fan on the inside of the case and the shroud and rad on the outside. I also sold the Eheim 1250 and got a Hydor L30 that will fit nicely on the other side of my drive cage mostly out of sight. I have almost completed my case modding and have also cut an access hole behind the CPU and NB so that I can add or remove things easily. I have spent a lot of the little time I have after work this past week researching the Pro-Core, JR120 and Black Ice Extreme rev II rads. There isn't much difference between the Pro-Core and the JR120 but there seems to be a lot between the JR120 and the B.I.E. II.

Does anyone know how much the acrylic paint they use hampers cooling on those rads as the Pro-Core I had was "unpainted" and was my choice as I know paint is an effective insulator? I am hoping to have things up and running next weekend. I am also documenting it all and taking pics of the modding and installation.
