Taskmgr.exe 100% CPU Usage

I just now installed this (Q815411) windows update, the newest nForce drivers with the new 4.09 audio, and the newest omega display drivers. After i restarted taskmgr.exe was taking 100% of my cpu, i also installed that windows update and the nForce drivers on my other computer and it didn't get this problem so i figured it was the omega drivers so i uninstalled them went to ati's website and installed their cat 3.10s and restarted again. That didn't fix the problem though so now i have no clue what just suddenly caused this to happen. Anyone have any ideas? Better solve this fast before i fall too many places in F@H :)

So, if you launch task manager and look at processes, taskmgr.exe is actually the culprit?

    What does Task Info say?

Yes, also the comp is slow like something is using 100% of the cpu all the time even when i'm not looking at the task manager.

Task info says the computer is acting normal, with F@H using near 100% of the CPU but it is still running slow like something is using all of the CPU. When i open programs they're slow to open, and slow to close.

Running a virus scan and spyware right now, probably take 20 minutes or so and we'll see if that comes up with anything, i doubt it but it might.

IIRC there was a Windows patch that caused this problem, but afaiaa, it was recalled and fixed. I recommend running Adaware and Spybot too ( http://atomnet.co.uk/?p=programs&search=adaware & http://atomnet.co.uk/?p=programs&search=spybot )

Just finished running both, i also just uninstalled the cat 3.10s with ATI's uninstall utility and when the standard display drivers were installed the computer was running fine and programs were launching and everything at their normal speed.

Now that I've got the cats installed again (3.9 this time, the version that was working earlier today) the problem is back! Looks like the cats are somehow causing this problem, at least that's my guess. No clue how to fix this now, except for running standard display drivers until you guys come up with a fix, i'll continue to mess with it though :)

*Edit* does anyone know how to roll back to the microsoft IDE drivers?

Fixed, guessing it was the SW IDE drivers but i don't really know, i messed with too much stuff at once to tell. Doesn't really matter what it is anyways, the problem is fixed! Next time I think I'll try and fix it myself before I come crying here, I should make sure it's not something stupid first.

Ah, don't be so hard on yourself. If we can't band together and get someone's problem solved, we don't have a reason for this site anymore!

Um, in your case, COULD have been the nforce2 IDE drivers. Try the cats again if you have not.... See, if XP does not like the IDE driver, it can slow down HD access modes, big time, and you will get when you just had. Not dumb to ask, dumb NOT to ask, IMHO. Ask and learn.... That is what a tech community is all about-- sharing knowledge--, and worst case someone else will later read this and think AHA and fix their box....

Yeah it was the IDE drivers, the reason I didn't think it was them at first is because they are installed on my other computer and it has no problems. I guess this computer just doesn't like them.

GAHHHHHHHH OMFG this is getting annoying, it happened again today right after i installed the Cat 4.1s, so i unstalled them with ATIs utility and went back to the 3.9s and the problem was still there. So i uninstalled the IDE drivers again and let windows install the standard ones, and the problem is still there. Is there any way to fix this or should i just go ahead and format and reinstall windows?

Right, close everything and open task manager, what is using the CPU time?
  • GobdGobd Seattle, WA

Okay, so i stopped F@H for the first time in forever (gahh) i can't believe it. The CPU Time is mostly idle process, with taskmgr.exe coming in second, idle usually hovering about 70% CPU Usage and Tasgmgr.exe 30%

So, there isn't anything wrong there. You are basically saying the computer feels slow, right?

Theres something wrong here obviously, the computer is slow, programs are starting/opening/doing everything slow and taskmgr.exe should never use anywhere near 30% of the CPU, at least I've never seen it do so on a working computer.

I have seen 20% on my old Athlon 500mhz, but yeah, 30% on a new machine is very high. Silly question, but it sounds like it is Graphics related, as if the drivers aren't loaded, then the CPU has to do all the rendering, which would make everything take longer (in Windows that is). Do a full uninstall of the Cats using the cat uninstaller off ATis site and reinstall the latest.

Done. This is what caused the problem the second time, or i assume this is what caused it because the computer was perfectly finbe before i used the unistaller and then installed the 4.1s. After i did that i used the uninstall program again and went back to 3.9 and the problem was still there.

Just for comparison purposes, on my T-Bird 1200@1333 I get

    F@H = 98%
    taskman = 2%

I think Enverex is pointing you in the right direction.

Do you have any CD's in any of your optical drives? I've also seen whacked IDE drivers which want to constantly scan for changes in removable media (like cdroms), driving up CPU usage. Try removing any discs.

I'd start with Env's idea first, though.

Reinstalled display drivers again just to see what would happen, it didn't help at all.

Did you just reinstall, or did you use the cleaner like Enverex suggested?
