SM17 HSF dead, already replaced

The fan on SM17's cooler went south. I didn't notice it for a while because it spins up fine on startup and then sorta half-ass spins after a few minutes (it starts does a full rotation and a half then spots). I replaced it with a volcano 7 (no laughing) that I got for free because it had a dead fan and I stuck a $5 antec 80mm on there so now all is good. As a side note I managed to burn 4 fingers touching the heatsink to take it off :P. The built in shutdown temperature must not work as it was waaaay hotter than 65*C.

The processor seems fine and is now happilly running at 10.5x151= 1589 MHz (highest the chipset will take) async because the ram won't go above 140. Frame times seem to be down about 10% so expect a similar increase in production.

LOL I know, it had some fortec copper base / aluminum body with 60mm fan on it before so I'm pretty sure the V7 is actually superior, and for the $5 the fan cost me :D. But at least it has AS3 so it my poor baby doesn't actually have to touch the V7 :D.

I'd look for something better, but its at 42*C as is and the chipset won't take any higher FSB. Next chance I get those bridges are getting closed. I can't stand being low on the SM production list :P.

On a side note I just added 3 Ghz of dedicated AMD folding power so those above me look out :D. Hopeing for another 2 Ghz dedicated in teh next couple of weeks.

yeah, but having it in close proximity to a thermaltake heatsink is going to scar (or rather, scorch) the poor CPU for life... ;D

Yah you were getting too close! I've been trying to break top 30 for so long, couldn't afford to drop a spot. I still gotta add more to make it before I lose spots though. There's some people catching up darned fast!.

nice post qp. Those are the problems that I like to hear about, the ones that are already fixed.

Another power-outage today caused some problems with SM17. I kept getting that decompression error that I saw someone else had. I wasn't at home so lowering the FSB had to wait a until know. I Knocked 3 MHz off the FSB and she's happily folding but got a tinker ... so expect 2 days of 0's :/.
