I prefer Exim for e-mail. Quite customisable and is used by most of JANET too.
Sendmail is old and insecure, it is just one of these "has been there for years" programs that is pretty much the default.
Not aware of any problems with BIND though as most people I have talked to recommend it and no-one has said otherwise.
Just a few months back BIND had two issues within a week (perhaps two). I'm not exactly sure what the issues were, but IIRC they both had to do with buffer overflows.
well, since this ridiculous thing is still an S-M byte for whatever reason, I figured I'd take the time to point out this quote from another one of the news posts running;
"To say a system is secure because no one is attacking it is very dangerous," said Gates, referring to operating systems that have a smaller share of the desktop market, such as Apple's Macintosh OS and the open-source software Linux.
now I'm sure all you MS hating Linux fanboys are gonna say "omfg bill gates is just trying to be competitive and say his adversaries suck" which yes, that's true, but it's also a pretty valid point.
if you prefer to live in a world where you have no choice, where competition doesn't exist, why don't you move to north korea or china. i don't understand windows fanboys myself. why would you NOT want to see linux succeed? I mean look at the console world. If there was only one console, it would cost $999 probably.

The Linux fanboy comment was clearly satiricle as denoted by the uber teeth smiley (:D) I have no qualms with Linux, it's great and all, I just find it amusing that so many people I know swear by Linux, think Bill Gates is the Devil yet they go home and use their Windows based PC with IE on it and spend the whole time bitching about how much it sucks, so clearly that statement is not pointed specifically at you cause I know you use Linux as a desktop system. Competition is great and I don't NOT want to see Linux succeed, but, the nature of competition IS choice as you said, and because I choose to use and like Windows and IE, sometimes I've been labeled some idiot or newb simply because that is my choice, which I think is unfair. I would say that we can agree to disagree, but we're not disagreeing, we just choose different things. I think prime's comment has been the best one in this thread about how an OS, or even a program, is just a tool to get something done. Which you feel allows you to be more productive is the best one for you to use, in my mind.
(and oh yea, again, my avatar is also purely satiricle cause I know several people think I'm some MS/Windows fanboy, which I'm not, but I will admit I use and like IE/Windows)
and why should this thread be locked drasnor? We're just exchanging opinions and having some fun, not bothering anyone..... :confused2

That is purely down to availability though. I bet if all most peoples favorite programs were available for Linux, then there would be hell of a lot more people using it. I know I would unquestionably, but the problem is, Linux just doesn't have all the programs I have/want. I think it's a far superior OS that I prefer to use, but still, without what I need, it has little use (to me)(at least for this machine).

I'm not seeing anything new that hasn't been said a thousand times before by a thousand different people. This conversation sounds like a bunch of children repeatedly telling each other their favorite color and trying to sway the others around to their choice.
People ARE entitled to their own opinion, justified in your view or not. Not to mention this is filling up my inbox. I guess I should unsubscribe.

Yeah, that definitly makes total sense. I guess my main reason for getting so heated about it is this. I had a class with like 12 people last Thursday and out of all of them I was the only one who wasn't trashing Windows and saying how great Linux is. Basically with these people there is no middle ground, no saying ANYTHING bad about Linux and if you tried to counter some point they made about Windows being insecure, no matter how ridiculous their point was, automatically you're some newb who doesn't know what he's doing cause he doesn't use Linux. Just irritates me that I've seen several times people who like using Linux will automatically call someone who LIKES using Windows a newb because "they dont know how/aren't smart enough" to use Linux, this opposed to someone who HAS to use Windows, such as yourself, because of the lack of certain programs that you need to use.
i'm in the same boat. i prefer linux, it's more fun to me. but i have to keep windows around because not everything I want to use is on linux..... yet.. and drasnor, sorry to offend your sensibilities, but as you said, unsubscribe and be done with it.
I keep seeing this stupid thread linked in short-media bytes and I just wanted to reiterate that I am right, you are wrong, and it's not inferior technology and mozilla is teh lose, kthxbye
you're right... I was about to say "mozilla is teh lose, MS rules and IE is teh bestest kthnx bye I win byebye primey" but then i realized the error of my ways. Mozilla is better than IE. I was wrong, as always.. I am wrong, totally and completely. In fact, I hereby publically apologize for making everybody stupider for having read my posts.
I take back everything I said. Prime wins. Definitely.
