Aiw

edited January 2004 in Hardware
Hi all. I'm somewhat newer to this forum this is my second post. I have a ? about the ATI AIW vid cards. I have an older 32 meg AIW (none Radeon) in an P2 400 and i want to take some home VHS movies to dvd. I'm wondering will this card preform well enough to do the job or should i look at getting a newer say Radeon 9600 AIW or 9700 AIW???? My main computer setup is an Asus P4C800 deluxe with a intel p4 2.6c oc'd to 3.1, 1 gig ram 2 120 gig Sata hd's in a Raid 0 setup, SB Audigy 2 Plat. This is where i'd be putting my 32 meg in. In that system now I just have a normal ATI 9600 128 Pro. Should just swap out my 32meg card to do movies or get a new one to do both jobs at once. I realize the later is better but if there is no differance between the 32meg and the 128meg quality won't waste the money.

Thanks in advance :aol:

There will be no difference. The computer does the actual processing. Your video card's GPU has nothing to do with the video capture process (for all intents and purposes). I'd say to save the money and just use what you've got.

    ;D

This reminds me of how all the computer-not-really-literate customers that come to CompUSA think video cards are defined by how much RAM they have.

If I had a dollar for each person who would ask my about getting a "128 card", I wouldn’t need to work anymore. No wonder why all the lower-end cards have the amount of RAM in a really big, bold font. It's even easier to read than the GPU's label...

It's more the manufacturers fault for essentially playing on the consumers limited knowledge, by essentially not supplying them with any. How can the everyday Joe be expected to see through the big number marketing of products?

In some cases it benefits the maker and the buyer, e.g AMD's not entirely clock related product names, but in most, it just serves to pump up not that great products by slapping mostly irrevevant bold fonts on the biggest numbers the marketing department can find in the spec list, and be-little the products that really do deserve to be in bold.

In a world where everything is about numbers (01010101010101), you'd be suprised how it's the little ones which tend to mean more.

Welcome to the forums Fatman777, nice to have ya here. Stick around.

You mean, more ram isn't bettar!?! =(

Hahahaa ... actually I used to think that .... back when the geforce 2 GTS was out .... but back then they were 16mb and 32mb cards ... I would think that WOULD actually make a difference.

Thanks guys for the help. I was wondering cause what could really be different about the video in on these cards. Now that I'm sure of what going on I"ll stick with my 32meg for getting these vid's onto DVD. Just gonna be a pain in the butt changing cards out when evey I wanna do some. I'd also just like to say you guys are great ya all give me staight up answers and there quick too.

It may not be as big of a deal as you think. It depends on how old the AIW is, but if it's a Radeon card, it should just be a matter of swapping cards- no driver change should be necessary.
