Getting Back into MTG

I've been diving back into the world of Magic: the Gathering again. I haven't played for over 10 years. I hope to be able to access (buried in storage) my collection from back then within the next few weeks here. I know there was some recent rule changes and I am sure there were some changes along the way. I've always been a fan of the thought "If they printed it on a card, use it to your full advantage" but I know from tournament rules you are not allowed to use this card or that combo blah blah blah. Looking for good reference sites deck/combo suggestions and the like.

I picked up a couple of Worldwake Intro Packs: Fangs of the Bloodchief (Black Vampire Deck) and Flyover (White and Blue Flying MultiKick Deck)

Due to the facts I have no one local that plays and no time to check out local tournies, I've been playing against myself. I though from the beginning that the Black deck would trample the White/Blue deck and after my first game I was right. Killed, 19-0. Then the next two games the White/Blue deck slaughtered the Black deck. It all came down to luck of the draw. The most powerful cards definitely stood out during play. There are some expensive Vampires and if the deck doesn't get out 6-7 swamps rather fast, there is not much to do. I look forward to seeing how these decks hold up against each other. I need to research strategy, mainly when to block and when to suck it up and absorb damage.

Look forward to the thoughts of other players,

-Bobby

Something I learned after taking a hiatus myself: Old cards are almost worthless for playing with. The new mechanics make them either obsolete or broken.

MTG?! I play competitively weekly at our local Friday night magic, along with going to some of the bigger tournaments when they happen. Feel free to ask me anything you want about the game. If you come to epic, I'm planning to have us draft some MTG there!

As far as information about the game, one of the best sites is http://www.starcitygames.com/

What would you like to know?

I'm checkin out that link. I gather that a "Draft" is a tournament of sorts but how exactly are the cards chosen/distributed?

Thanks for the help! And Oh yes I will be at EPIC, actually EPIC is the reason I got back into MTG.

In a "Booster Draft", several players (usually eight) are seated around a table and each player is given three booster packs. Each player opens a pack, selects a card from it, and passes the remaining cards to the next player. Each player then selects one of the remaining cards from the pack he or she just received, and passes the remaining cards again. This continues until all of the cards are depleted. Players pass left for the first and third packs, and right for the second. Players then build decks out of any of the cards that they selected during the drafting. Talking, signaling, and showing cards is forbidden during the drafting process.

I See. There is a bit more strategy involved in that then I expected.

I'm just gunna throw this out there because playing against myself is getting old fast,

Is there any way to play online via Cam/Chat? Does anybody do this? Anyone willing to try?

Via cam it doesn't really work since the cards are too small. Chatting can work but you have to trust the person your playing with 100% or they can cheat.

Lol, I know what playing by yourself feels like. Kinda takes away the thrill of the game. I only know two other people around me that play the game and i only ever see them every weekend/few weekends and even then, were usually playing warhammer 40k instead, lol. I was interested in that black vampire deck (I dont know what it is, im a black magic addict), even if it doesnt work out, it would probably have alot of good cards for my black/red deck (best deck ever!).

Is anyone up for some EDH at epic? For those unsure of what this is, it is the single best multiplayer format ever invented... All info can be found at http://www.dragonhighlander.net/rules.php.

Let me know if you are interested so I can make sure I have a deck built before then (I generally get deck ADD and remake my deck every month or so).
