Help mod Zalman 7000A-ALCu/Pick case NF7-S

edited February 2004 in Hardware
I am trying to fit a Zalman 7000A-ALCu on a NF7. I already got one of the holes cut off of the heatsink leaver but I still need to cut a chunk off of one of the silver platform so it will fit correctly. What is the best way to do this?

Also I need to get a case that the Zalman 7000a will fit in without hitting the powersupply or anything else. I am looking at the Antec Sonata and hoping that will fit my needs. Does anyone know this for certain that it will?

the antec lanboy and antec sonata have horrible cooling abilities.

I was under the opposite impression. Could you maybe recommend a case that isn't too expensive and would fit my needs?

What do you want regarding size, color, weight, noise, price, etc.? Do you need a PS too?
  • edited January 2004
    Size:Midtower preferably, but not crammed.
    Color: Black/white? Not too picky.
    Weight: Doesn't matter
    Noise: Quiet as possible
Price: Cheap as possible, Thinking ~$100 w/power supply shipped. (Like the Sonata)
And ability to use my Zalman 7000a without hitting anything(PS, case siding etc...)

    pics would help...

This is the problem I am having with mounting the actual heatsink. Otherwise the motherboard is so close to the power supply that it will not fit with the heatsink.

I am just going to get a new case. Can anyone recommend me one with the specs listed above? How bad really is the Sonata?

I have a LANBoy..... works fine for me.

But than again, it's not OCed, and has nothing in the way of high performance video hardware.

Have been looking at the same case myself. How's the cooling on that one. It has similar internal structure to the sonata but the front fan is placed in front of the harddrives not behind them. Also where would be the best for a rad if one where to wc. From what i've seen putting it in the front is impossible so the back would be the only place.

Hey cbloss that case will be perfect for you assuming no complaints about the cooling arrive and you don't mind the pricetag. Also there's no psu in it but that's not really a big deal.

Ya I think I got the heatsink modifications done. Can't file the metal down much more. If it doesn't work how they are now then it just won't fit. Now all I need is a case. Anyone have anymore information on that antec P160?

Personally, I don't like it. I've got an Antec SLK3700-AMB, which has a similar fan configuration, and the only thing keeping me from taking a sledgehammer to it is the fact that I paid good money for it.

2 120mm fans isn't really sufficient, IMO. The problem with small cases is that hot air gets trapped up near the optical drives, and this is exacerbated by only having the 2 120mm fans. If you're willing to put a blowhole or two in it though, it would be fine.

A blowhole? Please explain. Sorry for my ignorance.

A fan on the top of your case. Like a whale's blowhole on its upper side. Thus the name.

Cut one in? That wouldn't be too hard. I wouldn't mind doing that.

I'm not so sure i would like to do that. Oh well how about wc. Would putting the rad in the back give really crappy temps or would it be quite ok. And i do know that hot air exist there so i don't need a reminder. As for the case in general i think i'll go with it anyway. Surely antec can't sell cases just on their name.

Eyes only... I don't know why not. Apparently Adaptec has been doing it for years with their SCSI controllers, and god knows nVidia is doing it with the GeForce FX...

True at least on the nvidia part. Haven't heard much about adaptec. Thought they where good. Well i'll start a new thread over another case that has been interesting me but i'm sure people won't like it either. Checkout thoughts on this Sunbeam in the cases and psu forum.

    Edit

I noticed that there are an a thread about acrylic cases so making one about the sunbeam i was thinking about wouldn't be such smart idea.

I ended up getting the Antec P160. Man this case is awesome. There is so much room and the 90deg turned HD bays just rock. System temps vary between 21C to 29C but usually around 25 using two 120MM fans. I would definitly recommend this case to anyone.

Cool. Does the top of the case get warm at all?
  • edited February 2004
Only place that is kind of warm on the top is the very back and isn't very warm at all.

According to the Zalman site, the 7000A-Alcu will not fit the NF7-s. And I will back that up from personal experience. It's the caps you have circled, that are the problem. That's going to take some real modification to get it to fit
