Tried to run F@H at school today... it didn't work. Why?

I tried to run F@H on one of the computers in the lab, just while I was using it, because I was curious to see how fast it would be.

So, I downloaded the 4.0 console, and set it up with the following flags:
-advmethods, -forceasm, -forcesse, -verbosity 9, -local, and it wouldn't run. It executed fine, but it couldn't download any WUs. I let it try like 25 times. Could the school have a firewall set up to block whatever port F@H uses, or are Stanford's servers acting up or what?

I imagine that the school is probably firewalled. If you have a USB pendrive, you could sneakernet the work though.

Yeah. That's what I was going to do. I was just hoping to not have to. Doesn't F@H use a standard port that other things like IE use?

They use both port 8080 and also port 80.

If you do sneakernet it, then you might as well load that puppy up with 4-8 WUs so that you don't have to bring a new WU to it every day or two.

I wasn't planning on putting it on and running it permanently, I just wanted to see how it ran. If it runs well, I'll try to contact the IT department about installing it.

Well yeah, but we're only talking about 1.6GHz P4s here... not exactly speed demons. ;) There are at least 50 of them in one lab, though, along with at least 100 ~733MHz P3s...

Is there any way to set them up without having to enter the user name, machine id, team number, etc. on all of the machines?

Also, how do you set the machine ID when you're talking about 100s of machines?

set it up on one and copy the config, core, and fah exe files. That will have all the settings on it.

    Machine ID is always 1.

you're looking at approximately 150ghz of folding power as opposed to my approximate 65ghz. Also, I did the sneakernet folding venture for quite a few months before the wireless got installed!!!

    Eh. I couldn't handle "administering" a sneakernet of 100+ comps. I'm too laaaazy. :D

Besides, the sys admins wouldn't appreciate me doing it without their knowledge, I don't think. So, I'll try bugging them about it.
