This morning I rescued a sheriff from some bandits and helped liberate a town. Then I tracked down a bounty, captured him alive, then on the way back to town with him the rest of his gang showed up, killed my horse before I could kill them. A few more waves of bandits came, which I killed off too. But then as I was just within city limits, carrying my prisoner for miles one more wave of his gang came by and got the drop on me.
It's frustrating when it happens, but really cool in retrospect.
