Intel's 'Prescott' gets rebuilt for speed

edited January 2004 in Science & Tech
Intel has redesigned a key element of its upcoming version of the Pentium 4 CPU in an attempt to allow the chip to reach higher speeds.

[blockquote]The Prescott processor, an enhanced version of the Pentium 4 set for release in early February, will feature a pipeline--the equivalent of a assembly line inside a chip--that will be substantially longer than the 20-stage pipeline on current Pentium 4s, according to sources.

Intel just doesn't get it, do they?

Wait... stupid question. Intel gets it. It's the general public that doesn't get it. :banghead:

the IPC may be lower, but if it allows the CPU to scale higher then it might be better in the end. It all depends on how much it hurts IPC and how much it helps clock scaling.
