Stupid #@$*ing FlashMenu...

edited January 2004 in Hardware
Welp, I went to flash my BIOS to a later version last night using FlashMenu (which I had no trouble with before) and guess what? I now have a big, heavy paperweight! :mean:

There is no floppy drive access attempts, and clearing the CMOS was no help. Looks like I'll either have to hotflash the sucker (Thrax?... please?) or buy a new flashed chip. :grumble:

If anyone can think of something I could do (aside from hotflashing), please lemme know.

Since you are online, does your board have a dual BIOS or a recovery hotkey??? This looks like a bad FTP download file, or flashing with BIOS not defaulted first. Let's see.... power down box, unplug the PSU connector, pull CMOS battery, waitr one minute, replace with new CMOS battery. Anything??? No, then you need a new BIOS chip, agreed, but if you can get with mfr tech support they might fix whatever went wrong or even send you a BIOS chip (on a ONE-TIME basis)....

Well, I ordered a new BIOS chip from Badflash.com, as Thrax and I couldnt get the problematic chip to flash.

Anyone know how long it takes to ship from this place?

I ordered from BadFlash, got my chip in 3 days. I e mailed them first, with questions. They were all over it, right away. Good deal, quick service, good follow up. Highly recommended!

    Invest in a bios savior...

I thought about it. But I feel if I don't do anything risky with it from now on, I'll be fine. I

I was thinking, I MAY have flashed to BIOS made for the rev 1-1.2 boards. Now that the machine is back up, I'll be able to check the history and figure out who broke what (flashmenu, or me).

Tex, you never flashed me! I feel really let down. :bawling:

"A++ for Badflash". Amen! When I destroyed a BIOS chip on my NF7-S, I had a brand new, programmed chip from Badflash three days after my order.

For those of you who might wish to take Tex up on his offer, Badflash also sells unprogrammed chips for a reasonable cost.

I wonder where this guy buys the chips from? The one he sent me was the exact same brand as the one which died, which leads me to wonder if ABit hooked him up (as they do already indorse his site).

    Well I'm embarrased...

It would appear as if I flashed the chip to version 2.3, which is made for rev. 1-1.2 NF7-S boards. Why this made the chip unflashable by Thrax's NF7-S I don't know...

Easy answer - there are only two or three manucturer's of PC CMOS chips. Not like there's a big selection.

There is a lot bigger selection of bios than you might think, and trying to get OEM chips is a bit tricky. There is only one distributor for PMC in the USA and the minimum order is 300 chips. We actually have to stock about 30 different types of flash from Intel, AMD, Winbond, SST, PMC & EON to support all the boards we do.

Part of the art of selling bios chips is knowing what chips you can substitute as many chips can't be had outside of china.
