SMx Project - Sign up for SM21

The contract is done, so it's time!

Here are the requirements:

1) Team member must be in good standing and have shown dedication to Team Short-Media and the Folding@Home project for the long haul. Past participation and contributions are taken into account.

2) The member must be able to provide the computer with a safe and secure environment for an extended period of time - this means an indeterminate period.

3) You must be knowledgeable in building computers and loading operating systems, and all that is entailed. In the event the rig should fail, the host is expected to make a good effort in trying to repair the rig and report to the team what is going on.

4) Dedicated, "always-on" Internet connection 24/7, 56K and up, and a free port on an existing network (we don't normally supply routers/hubs/switches with the SMx rig). If the internet connection should fail, the host is expected to make good faith efforts to get back online as soon as is possible.

5) The computer must run and "fold" 24/7. (Yes, the Team is generous enough to allow you to go on vacation and turn it off.) Keep in mind that 24-hour operating will increase your electricity bill by up to a few dollars per month. The Team expects the host to make good faith efforts to keep the rig running as much as is possible.

6) The computer shall fold for Team #93, under the user name of "SMx" exclusively unless it has been voted on to make it differently. The team can/will monitor the rigs output by way of statistics provided by Stanford, Statsman and the like.

7) In the event the host can no longer host the SMx rig or he/she is not able to run the rig for an extended period of time due to things like being called to duty in the armed forces for example, it is to be found a new host by normal host selection process.

8) What does the host get out of this? The pride of being able to host a SMx Folding rig, one of very few to earn this privilege. To be able to help Team Short-Media be the best team and the F@H project find cures.

9) Hosts must provide contact information such as phone number and address in case an emergency contact needs to be made.

10) Hosts must sign the hosting contract before the computer will be shipped to them.

Disclaimer;
- All Team-donated parts that go into a SMx donated Folding@Home computer are property of the Short-Media.com Folding@Home Team.
- Short-Media.com, and/or its owner(s), and/or administrator(s), and/or moderator(s), and/or member(s), shall not be held responsible or liable for any losses incurred either directly, or indirectly as a result of hosting any SMx rig. The host selected shall bear full responsibility for said rig. By applying to be selected as a host, you acknowledge you understand, agree with, and will abide by these rules as set forth here and as may be amended in the future as required.

NOTE: This entire project and the rules set forth above is/are based on TRUST. We, the team, trust that you, the host, will do all you can to keep the rig folding as much as is possible, in its name, for the Short-Media.com Folding Team. You, the host, trust, that we, Team Short-Media, support you in every way we can.

So anyone that can meet the requirements posted above and would like to host such a machine, please enter your name in the 'hat' and a host will be picked in a week depending on the number of entries.

Any other useful info like internet connection, hosting facilities, and experience would help the committee greatly in choosing a host for SM21.

Good luck!!

I'm shipping a whole bunch of stuff off to Mr. Kwitko this week - maybe some of it will wind up in SM21!

    Good luck to our contestants!

well, I guess I'll start off and throw my name in the hat. I have a nice/safe place to host it, can run 24/7, with Cable internet. Have built a few computers in my time, and have no problem signing a contract. Thank you :fold:

Ill enter this one too; have the usual credentials: 24/7 internet, have a good amount of repair experience under my belt, air conditioned hosting facility (read apartment) no probs with the contract and most of all, am willing to dedicate the time involved to make sure the box stays up.

looking forward to a decision, no matter what way it goes :)

I'll throw my big white felt hat into the ring too I suppose ;)

My house is 2 hours away from my dorm, but it has an always-on 128Kb DSL connection and is air-conditioned. There's room next to the other computers in the folding farm, and I'll usually be able to service it on weekends if there's a problem.

I've built a few machines and rebuilt quite a few, both Macs and PCs, have some Linux shell experience and extensive Windows and MacOS experience, and have been folding for the team for about a year and a half now.

I would personally say Gnome or Mondi for this one, not to knock anyone else. Mondi has givne one heck of a lot of good knowledge to this site in forums and does by stats fromn his boxes know how to make boxes that fold well and keep them folding. Gnome is an enthusiast who has contributed to a lot of boards.

I would add my hat to the ring, but would have problems with heat and funding right now. room is too hot to add a box I am working on plus three always on rigs. ALL of them would flake, except in winter down here. AND I am not an OCer enough to be able to push a rig a lot, so an OCer might be able to get more prod out of an SMx rig.

    * bows gracefully out, WANTS to but cannot do so.... :(

Wild idea.... Start a waiting list for boxes. Then you have a pool of folks who want to and have proven they CAN host when needs come up for relocations or new box hosting or rehosting a box that cannot stay where it is for other reasons. Then you can pick from the waiting pool also.

    John.

Awwwwwwwww! Thanks for the compiliment John! If there was one person on the site that should have a box its you! I say when ever you get the heat / funds he gets one!

Each candidate is definitely worthy and all considerations will be given to all candidates by the extremely committed and longstanding host selection committee. Believe me when I say they agonize over these decisions. I am not a part of the HSC, and I'm glad.. It's a tough call, always...

Thanks, but I drill into mine all the time-- tweaking and otherwise. I like deep knowledge tweaking and study. That is the other reason-- with research time for all the things I am interested in and fixing\upgrading\specing both as a pro and developing business and solving misc developing eye issues (surgeon says strightening right eye is out, I would see massively double for life if I did that and other eye folks are having problems fixing optically), would not do justice to all three either.

Also very welcome and earned, you and Mondi both ROCK as enthusiasts-- not to knock anyone else, either, LOTS of you here rock as techs and enthusiasts.

I'll throw my name in to make it interesting.

Folding for Team 93 for 6+ months now. I haven't been at this as long as some others who have volunteered, but I am dedicated to both this site and our Team. I am cranking out 600 to 700 points a week right now on 3 CPU's, and looking to add a few more systems to my name soon.

24/7 Cable at home, and a couple of free ports on the router. I have room in my den to place the box, either high on a shelf or in a closet, and have lots of long ethernet cables to plug it in. I can run PC Anywhere on the box to log in remotely, so don't need a KVM switch once it is operational. I also have the easy ability to move it to my office if I have any connection downtime at home (ie, I'm moving in a month, and can bring it to the office during the move so as not to lose connectivity.)

I have no problem signing a hosting contract, I am a family man, mid-30's, and a military reservist, if those things count towards respectability points (or trustworthiness points) with anyone. And I am a good personal friend of MediaMan's, so if the box is not folding, you can send him over to harrass me ;)

And of course, I have no problem working to fix anything that goes wrong with the box.

And I know that no one usually gets selected the first time they volunteer, so I expect that this will be my primer for future considerations :)

No it won't. Proximity to the parts means nothing. It's about your dedication to the cause, not how 1337 you'll be if you're a host. This is an honor, a privilege, not a right.

The decision about who is a host is based on several factors, and you have just as much chance as any other person who throws their name into the hat. To think otherwise would be presumptuous and just setting yourself up for disaster.

With that said, may the best candidate win, best of luck to *all* of you.

Let's just use this thread to post interest in hosting the rig, not speculate on who is going to receive it or any future rigs... That's for the host selection committee to decide, not any of us little people :D
