SMx Project - Hosting Contract finalized

After many, many revisions (including 3 more after I originally posted this thread a few hours ago :p ), the SMx hosting contract is ready to go into effect. It is our sincerest desire that this contract change absolutely nothing about how the SMx Project operates. We have codified the most important elements into this legal document to help protect the team from further losses.

Our goal was to keep it simple. This document does not represent the sum total of what SMx hosts do (their efforts often go far beyond anything contained herein) and it is not meant to insult the current hosts that have done such an excellent job for the team.

Current hosts:
  • Please download the document and type in the specifications
  • Please print the document, initial both pages, and sign where designated.
    A witness must co-sign.
  • If you are a minor, a guardian must sign in your place. Please print your name where indicated below that.
  • Please mail the document to me. I will reimburse for postage through PayPal if needed ;)

Hosts will be PMed shortly with my address. If you don't get it, please PM me for it.

The only other hitch is that when we send out significant replacement parts for the rig or a significat piece dies, we may need to send out another slip of paper to amend the parts list on the contract. We'll deal with that when we get to it though on a case-by-case basis. I promise to do my best to keep it as simple and painless as possible :) As I said, the goal is just to offer the team extra protection, not create a mountain of paperwork for us.

Thanks again to all our awesome hosts!

Can i send it to you just in case I get picked in the future that way I already have one sent in?

That would be difficult since you'd need to fill in the system specs first ;)

Important: Hosts, if there are components in the system that are not owned by the team and that you do not wish to officially donate to the team, please remove the lines for those components from the contract entirely. Just be careful the page break doesn't end up in a weird place if you do that :) Also notice there are no places to put info about heatsinks and case fans, because I figured we'd all go nuts if we had to sign papers over a fan :p

Stupid question, but where's the list for the parts that were donated? SM17 would have to be powered down for me to find the video card specs / some of the other stuff and I'd rather not do that. I remember the stuff arrived correctly .. but I can't remember what it is.

Yep that's right, The fortis cooler is currently sitting in a drawer and was replaced by a Volcano 7 (with a new 80 mm fan) after the fortis's fan died. If I can find another 60 mm I'll stick it on. I can ship it back if needed but its heavy shipping might be almost as much as its worth. If you want me to its not a problem though. I think that MM donated it IIRC (it came with box, imiatation silver thermal paste and everythin).

Don't worry about the heatsink/fan, I didn't even put it on the contract. Thanks for getting a replacement on it :)

I don't want to make too of a deal out of this, but I'm going to get it off my chest.

I understand the reason for the contract, but when I agreed to be a host I never agreed to sign a contract. I liked the arrangement based on trust, and I hope that the team is satisfied with my conduct in hosting IC_11.

I've mentioned before that I'm a little bitter that the decision to have a contract was made by the selection committee, which is an invite-only club, rather than the general membership. I will acknowledge that had it been left up to the membership, the same decision may have been made. Since my objections are based merely on principle, I'll just get over it and do what I have been doing - host one of the most successful folding rigs to date.

With that all being said, I'll still sign the contract. I know it's not the intention of the selection committee to make me feel a little insulted, but I couldn't help feeling that way. Had to get it off my chest.

    Love you guys (and gals),

    Johnathan :fold:

Garg, believe me when I say I understand your misgivings, and the last thing we want to do is to imply mistrust to our current hosts. It is not that. Our intention is to protect ourselves from ever having to go through the crap that shenlong and film put us through. They both stole hardware that belongs to the rest of us, and having a contract in place will help prevent those kinds of losses in the future. Those losses are not just monetary, either.. They are a blow to the team and to the spirit of the team in general, and they really suck.

    Gargoyle,

Put quite simply a contract was brought about to protect members such as yourself and the team which you are proud of. If it were not for the unfortunate recent happening there would be no requirement for it. Until that moment the team was 110% damn fine people. One tarnished it.

As the team grows in popularity and the SMx project (now on SM21 I believe) grows with it...the chances of someone trying to abuse the honor of being part of the SM folding team and community...increases. Damn shame that there have been and may (hopefully not) be one again who stains the good reputation of the team and its members.

With that being said I totally understand why you may look at "a contract" in a negative light. I can understand if you may that you or others were not consulted.

I can tell you that those behind the writing of the contract went around on this issue for a good couple of months in earnest. The chat about a contract has been bantered about even longer. A contract gives those bestowed with the responsibility of the SMx rigs a form of recourse in a last solution situation. It gives us the authority to put an SMx rig into proper hands should the need arise.

And we don't ever want the need to arise again.

A contract sets the tone with new hosts that folding with the SM team carries some responsiblity for equipment along with it being fun, a privelage, an honor and the ability to say..."we're going to be number 1." No one who had a hand in the contract ever wanted to insult current and long-time team folders. The contract came about simply because one bad person decided to abuse the SMx project and this team's name. The contract with current members is unfortunate paperwork but I think it's fair that brand new members see that the vets had to do it as well therefore it's all fair.

Every ICx and SMx host already knows the lay of the land. To use a movie title...it's similar to Pay it Forward. Good people doing good things for others and when their time is done they pass it on.

Garg sorry to see you feel this way and I guess it may seem like a slap in the face to the hosts that keep good their machine runnin but its just something that has to be done.

I'll sign and send tomorrow after double checking the parts list. I believe that the choice to have all SMx Host sign a contract is a good one. I am a new SMx host but I have already begun to feel a great bond to SM19 and to the team, much more than before my selection. I am signing this to show my support to the team and their attempt to keep the SMx Host thing going without further buttheads stealing our equipment. There ya go.... straight from my mouth.... I mean fingers.

Glad I haven't sent mine in yet. I missed that part!

To all ICx/SMx hosts. Please don't feel "insulted" for being required to sign a contract. ALL parts in Icontric10 were 100% mine until I donated it to the team. I will gladly sign a contract to help protect TEAM PROPERTY. :)

Not trying to thread hijack but I was just curious since it had been brought up earlier.

It does seem like the whole SMx thing is like a club or some invite only thing. I say this not in bitterness or to be insulting at all. I'm very proud to be part of this team and I'm glad to be on a team with such devoted people. It just seems like there's no central place to see "who's who" on the team, who's 'in charge' who the people on the commitee are, how they were selected to be there and why, where parts are supposed to go if you want to donate and such.

My main point I guess is I think there should be like a central place where all this information is, I checked the F@H section on the main page and saw none of this type of information. Anyway, I've been a member around here for a long time, been folding for team 93 for even longer and just want to get more involved. On that note, I got a couple NICs and an S3 Trio (w00t) video card that I can send off to whomever is in charge of such things. :)

Camman, I know this is a prob right now :( A central directory is on my laundry list of things to do as I redesign all the folding stuff on the front page (it kinda sucks right now, I know). I'll see about doing something to make it clearer until then, since it may a good bit before that's all done.

The host selection committee includes pretty much the founding members of the team + a few others:

TBonz (IIRC, the founder of Team 93 - someone correct me if I'm wrong)
    Leonardo
    Muddocktor
    mmonnin
    seversphere
    t1rhino
    General Keebler
    Mr. Kwitko
    Profdlp
  • LincLinc Owner Detroit Icrontian

    That's all correct :)

Marc (mmonnin) is the current chairman and fund manager.
Mr. Kwitko is the parts manager.
I handle the paperwork (contracts) and sig code.
