I feel strange paying money for a phone app. Hopefully that will change one day, but if it's paid I generally avoid it. I will use the heck out of ad-supported though.

I have the same feelings, which is odd considering I have no problem buying a $9 lunch as frequently as I do.

I have a couple apps that I'd like to get rid of the ads in, but they've got other issues besides the ads, so I hesitate to pay them just yet. So far, I haven't spent a dime for apps.

    Good point.

Heck yeah! Droid Wall is just what I wanted to make sure an app doesn't call home.

I used oneclickroot last night and am ashamed at how easy it was. I have no idea what I'd been waiting for.

Having a bit of trouble backing up my current stock ROM with Rom Manager, though. Looking forward to playing with some new software.

    Good point.

I use HOSTS file to rid ads. Works quite well. Similar in operation in windows, its in the etc\hosts.

I used to avoid paying for apps on my phone as well. Then I remembered that I willingly fork out $50 for a game that I'll play through once and forget about. Now I don't feel bad at all paying a few dollars for solid, useful apps that I use on a near daily basis.

If I can pay ten bucks for a game on Steam, I can buy 10 apps for the same amount that I'll use way more.

AdFree will do that without having to use ADB or terminal.

Apologies if this thread isn't appropriate for this question:

Is it possible to disable (or change) the ADW launcher on my phone?

It crashes frequently, and it does cause slowdown from time to time (mostly when transitioning to newly opened apps).

I like the launcher a lot, but the trouble it's been causing recently has me less concerned about awesome and more concerned with usability.

Just need this phone to go another two months.....

If you already have one you want to switch to installed, go to Applications -> Manage Applications -> ADW EX -> Clear defaults. Next time you hit home, you'll be asked which launcher you want to use.

If you need to get another one, download Launcher Pro or something like that, which will usually reset the defaults for you so you can choose it on next launch.

ADW is one of the most stable launchers out there. You should seriously consider a factory reset, or coming by Toronto so I can give that phone some TLC.

In other words, FCs for ADW are just a symptom, not the problem.

Launcher Pro and Zeam Launcher are the popular alternatives.

Will a factory reset remove the work you've done? I'm not sure how much you did extra outside of the Android installation.

(I don't doubt that ADW isn't the problem. This phone is so OOOOOLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDD)

Before you resort to a phone wipe, try the fix permissions script. I've had that work well in the past for fixing FCs: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Fix_permissions

So, what are the options for us T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 (Hercules T-989) for rooting and what which ROM is the best? Are there any ICS ROMs available?

Big List of available ROMs (there are ICS based available)

Thanks, Tushon. I had been reading xda and, of course, Cyanogenmod but wanted more info from by besties. I am growing very tired of the Default Samsung/ T-Mobile look and feel.

CM9 for that phone is under development, but no immediate time frame (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1558580&page=1)

I like CM7 a lot and will thoroughly enjoy CM9 when it drops, as my phone will never get ICS otherwise.

Best thing I can say is try out a few ROMs without worrying about restoring data into each one just to get a feel for it. Just make sure you did the backup right first.
  • ThraxThrax 🐌 Austin, TX Icrontian
Official ICS is coming (same TouchWiz UI), and the ICS ROMs will suck until that happens. Try CM7 or sit tight.

TouchWiz on ICS is not all that different to Gingerbread's. CM9 on my Galaxy S1 was a more drastic change.

The good thing about TW is it sucks consistently across releases.
