Are there any errors? You're saying you have a problem, but not describing anything that can help us fix the problem.

Do you have any other valve multiplayer games installed that DO work?
For example, does TF2 or HL2DM work?

It could be a firewall problem. It could be a corrupt install of CS:S. It could be the server(s) you are trying to connect to run older versions or have their own set of problems...but to ask why it happens to you... philosophy thread? =)

Uninstall Norton. Delete CS from Steam and re-download.

Uninstall Norton or if you must keep it and you want to frustrate yourself, read the help files that came with it. You don't need a third party software firewall though. You can use Avast or Avira which are free virus protection and have better detection rates than Norton.

Do what you want, but the majority of us are going to recommend that you just remove Norton like that dude Thrax.

Being serious for a moment. What kind of router do you have? A software firewall may not be necessary depending upon how your connected to the internet.

Is there a way that I can use norton and play CSS?

I'm going to uninstall it when I get a chance but PirateNinja are you sure that I will work when I uninstall norton? and will avast block CSS for me because I'm worried that I will block CSS.

    Probably, but apparently not easily.

The question that needs to be asked is: What is the reason to stick with Norton? This isn't meant to be judgmental towards you or anything - it's needed for information. If you're looking for antivirus software, Avira or Avast are leaps and bounds better than Norton - the resources required by either one of those is far lower than Norton. In fact, unless your system drive is being scanned you may not even notice a difference between those and no antivirus program at all. If you need a firewall, your router likely provides all the intrusion protection you need.

Avast should not block CS:S. It does a pretty good job of staying out of the way when it's supposed to.

We don't know. Try it and find out. At worst, you've replaced a shitty program with a good one. At best, you've replaced a shitty program with a good one and got CS working.

Look at page 10 of the av-comparitives report[pdf], or trust that when multiple people recommend something, it is a good idea.
