new computer

edited February 2004 in Hardware
hey guys i was wondering if you guys could help me out. i just recently have built myself athlon 64 computer. here are the specs:

-athlon 64 3000+
-ABIT K8T800 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU, Model "KV8-MAX3" http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-165&catalog=22&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0
-1 stick Micron PC2700 333 ECC 1 GB DDR and 1 stick PC2700 333 ECC 512MB DDR
-Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive
-Samsung Beige 52X24X52X16 CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
- ATI RADEON 9800PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR

First off I only had the 1GB stick of RAM, but then i realized that this motherboard requires two sticks to work. so i went up to frys and bought a 512 stick of the same speed, its not the same brand though bc i got the 1GB free and this RAM wasn't marked with a name. When everything is in place, i turn on the computer and the first time i turned it on, the cpu fan spun then automaticly went out, while all other fans in the computer ran, then after 5 seconds of it being on, all fans turn off. but right before all the fans turn off, a beeping noise goes off, dee doo dee doo, and continues until i power off the computer. if i try to turn the computer off again, all fans work EXCEPT the cpu fan, and it does the same thing where all the fans go out and the beeping starts. a friend has told me that maybe the cpu fan does not turn on because its temperature sensitive and since the computer only runs for 5 seconds it does not turn on. btw the fan does work bc if you plug it into another slot it works. when its on for that 5 seconds the monitor does not respond, and i tried a bios boot disk but the floppy does not respond either. another thing is there are only two combinations to have 333 memory in place in the slots, and i've tried both to have the same problem, which is have them in DIMM2 and DIMM3.

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time

    Couple things:
-I don't think you need two sticks to run it.
-Try reseating the ram, also try the new stick individually.
-Make sure the ram is on the abit compatibility list

well it looks like the micron 1gb 333 isn't compatable, doesn't it? and i tried the 512 in the first slot and it did the same, i think it does require two sticks. how do you reset the ram?

reseat = take it out, put it back in, and push harder this time :)

try clearing the BIOS as well...there's a jumper by the CMOS battery for that (do it while the computer is off and unplugged)

i can't find the jumper, and im not really sure what it should look like. and all the bios information in the users manual has to do with on screen stuff not the motherboard

This is the clear cmos jumper. There should be 3 pins there.

    it starts like this:

    | {| |}

    switch it to this:

    {| |} |

    and then back to this:

    | {| |}

tried that and still the same problem, i bet its the ram type for the board is wrong

What sort of power supply are you using? (ie wattage / company).

Try just one stick and then just the other stick alone. Also check if your manual has any restrictions on what DIMMS to place where (might not specify at all, I don't know this board).

if that doesn't work try booting with an old crappy video card (something PCI or something) and with no other components. ie. just the CPU, RAM and misc video card.

Unless you know something I don't (which you may... I haven't kept up with the athlon 64), the socket 754 models run just fine with 1 RAM stick.

Also, I don't think the RAM you bought is compatible with the board. My understanding is that ECC ram only works in boards that can support ECC. Try some regular DDR and see what happens.

Bingo @ G1 @ ECC= certainly not necessary, likely not compatible.

its a raidmax 420w, and yea the manual has some restrictions but i've tried many combinations, including just one stick in the dimm1 slot, trying both pieces of ram seperatly. i will try and get a hold of some ddr ram.

i just tried a stick of 512 that was ddr400 in dimm1 that wasn't ECC and it did the same thing

was it on the abit compatibility list?
  • edited February 2004
no but the list is only ones they've tried http://www5.abit.com.tw/test_report/KV8-MAX3/index.php

i figured it out, my motherboard requires two sticks of ram, and the cpu requires ddr400

The board cannot require two sticks of ram. The socket 754 athlons have single channel memory controllers.

How many memory slots are there on the board? 3.
Why on earth would you put 3 RAM slots on a board that requires that memory be installed in pairs? You wouldn't.

No socket 754 board in the world needs two sticks, and ECC will not work.
