Missed this post for some reason... regardless...

They are apparently selling Clevo notebooks, which are identical to the Sagers we get over here in the States (Clevo OEM's for Sager and a number of other companies).

Clevo notebooks are excellent, and I love my Sager NP5620, but I would wait a bit before buying one if I were in the market right now. Clevo has a new model on the way that will have a 17" screen with a Radeon 9700m 256MB GPU.

Also, can you get Emachines notebooks in England?

And, if you can't wait, get the Xtreme, not the Quaddra DTS Pro. The Xtreme has a smaller screen, but is a far superior machine to the Quaddra. It's got the i865pe chipset, which is vastly superior to the SiS chipset in the Quaddra.

I'm pretty deep into notebook research right now, problem is figuring out what's good value in Sterling. I'm moderately familiar with USA pricing and more so with Canadian $ pricing. I don't know what taxes/duties have for impact on imports to British Isles and am not familiar with other European vendors for pricing comparisons.

The machine specs are outstanding, I'm looking for something very similar. From other threads, members highly recommend 5400 or better yet 7200 rpm hard drives, for speed - at the expense of battery life per charge. The 128MB ATI 9600Pro Mobility is THE graphics chipset to have, especially for gaming.

I don't see wireless network card mentioned, in North America a traveller can pick up a signal at just about any airport or hotel. 811b or better yet 811g built in or add in isn't usally an expensive option.

Looks like it has a nice keyboard. Never seen 5 speaker surround on a notebook before, tho with the size the speakers will be don't expect too much - headphones are the way to go imho. 6-in-1 card reader is a nice bonus.

It looks like a great machine but once again, no comment on the value relative to your location. Similar machine @ 3.0 cpu is going to run around $2,3-2,700 USD + taxes + shipping etc.

That company looks to be pretty on the ball with decent warranties and reasonable prices. I personally already have a monster notebook (Dell Latitude D800) and now find myself in the market for something small and managable (looking at a Panasonic Toughbook). I can't really comment on the pricing as I'm not all that familiar with the European market. At 4.2 kg that's also not a light sucker. It'll put a good dent in your shoulder if you plan on carrying it a long ways as with accessories your standard load will easily be 6-7 kg.

Sager has one coming out any day now. The 8790, I believe. Much the same specs as the 8890 and the 4780(?):
    -17" widescreen
-4 speakers + a "sub" (sub in laptop speak means like 2" diameter  ), --i865pe chipset w/dual-channel ddr support
-offered with P4-Cs and -EEs up to 3.4GHz+,
-will take 2 hard drives in RAID 0 or 1 (maybe more; the 8890 will take 4HDs, 2 RAIDed, 3 if you still want an optical drive)
-available with built-in bluetooth, 802.11b or g (forgot which)
    -standard gigabit ethernet
    -available DVD burner
-built-in numeric keypad (separate from the qwerty area) Yeah, it's got a full 104-key keyboard. :D

So I take this to mean that no one is building a notebook with ATI graphics and Pentium M CPU??? A 3.2P4 HT is a powerful machine, but the Ms are fast and light on power usage. I am planing for my Toshiba to 'have an accident' as soon as I can find a good replacement.

Notebooks have smaller batteries. Running a 17" display needs a bigger battery if you have a fast CPU and very good graphics, much bigger and heavier battery.

Closest I know to what you want (and brain did not rertain model number but I found the article by Anand Shimpi in CPU mag dated March 2004, on page 27-- Sony X505/SP) is a Sony Vaio notebook, carbon fiber case, Ultra Low voltage Pentium M P4 at GHz, much smaller display. No folks are not making as low voltage M's still draw low volts at relatively high amps, and batteries have to supply wattage to meet draw. Takes big or multiple batteries to get long unplugged processing with what you want, mfr needs space in case for battery unless you can find a battery wedge accessory for same, most notebooks do not have that available for them as they have no connectors for same. Notebooks have also smaller displays, this is a 10" viewable area LCD panel computer.

Not made due to battery needs fro what you want, sorry. Not YET, anyhow.

ed - yes, such notebooks can be found. Dell and VoodooPC both make Centrinos with Mobility 9600Pro and I'm sure several others do too. Probably at better price points.

Well, the D500P is the same thing as the Sager NP5800 series, and the XTR, so whichever is cheaper.

Ed, yes, there are Centrino notebooks with 128MB 9600s. ECS has one, I believe, and Dell and Voodoo do, as Keto said.

Here's a link to the 8790 with pics http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=9961 No one seems to know when it'll launch. You might want to go to www.notebookforums.com and read some of the threads in the "Sager General" forum. If there's a launch date and prices, those guys'll be the 1st to know.

Clevo won't be selling it. Clevo makes the notebooks. They sell them to Sager, Fosa, Rockdirect, etc. Sager et. al. then sell them to you.

tony, email ajp tech support, ask them if there is an inside of laptop bar code sticker you can give them the number off of that they can trace and figure out what adapter you need, or if you know whne it was made, ask them if year of mfr helps. If the charging problem cannot be solved, I would not buy the laptop.

In the US, the serial number is required to be on a sticker, and some laptop mfrs also hide one so they can trace if the sticker on outside is defaced. Tracing lets them sell right exact part better.
