Honorable mention to Sam and Max Hit the Road and Wizardry 7, I put a lot of hours into those two and never beat them as a kid. I did go back and beat Sam and Max eventually.

Just saw this thread, thought maybe I'd pitch in:
A PuckMan machine at a carnival was my first game, just before the Pac Man craze.
I can show you steno pads full of Metroid passwords, which I still have.
And, I blew all my allowance on Street Fighter II at the mall and bowling alley.
The last game is
Moon Breakers
, which almost no one's heard of. But, space ships: pew pew pew.
