Minecraft: Hunger Games (Expo?)
Before I begin, if you don't like the Hunger Games, feel free to replace the idea with Battle Royale. Seein's how the movie just came out, I figured lots more people will have heard about it.
So, for a few years now, I notice some folks on Minecraft have been doing some 'hunger games' themed servers, where they throw a certain number of people in an arena and have them duke it out, survival-style. If this isn't a hilarious idea for an Expo tournament, I don't know what is.
I've checked out a few maps, and most of them are pretty great - EXCEPT for one or two glaring issues. Most of the cornucopias suck, for instance. Some have very sparse cover (one has very thick cover, though, adding to the extreme 'oh god oh god oh god he has a bow and he's hunting me' of the game). They all are built such that they have the addition of a 'gamemaster' - someone who flies around watching, spawning shit, setting shit on fire, dropping a hail of arrows, building a feast, whatever.
WE SHOULD DO THIS.
I would volunteer to spearhead the tournament if we could make it expo-for-real, but I haven't played minecraft in ages, so I would formally request help:
-The official 'yes, let's schedule this into expo.'
-Map editing - the cornucopia looks like balls in a lot of these, nonetheless I'd like to modify an already-created map. Trouble is, I have no idea about the new shit, what's possible, what isn't, how to do it. Seriously, guys. I checked out before redstone worked.
-Gamemastering - How might I go about this? I'll happily plan the traps, but I've no idea how to go about setting them up - or setting them off. I would require assistance and playtesting.
-Simple distribution. Is there a way to spawn everyone in the proper spots? Or do I have to spawn them all and have them move into position? This is one of the many questions I would like someone to help.
Obviously I can't have a lot of people help, because if this DOES go down, then lots of people would know the map!
Thoughts? Volunteers? Flamers/trolls?
EDIT: Why the fuck did I put this in Hardware?

I like it
Volunteers?
You have my Bow. Not to sound cocky or anything but I would bet my Minecraft knowledge beats out most if not all of the players here at IC from a players point of view. Redstone, traps, building, I got that. The server side stuff not so much. If it takes a plug-in, I'm sure we could get some help from @Ardichoke and/or @RyderOCZ. I had already brought up that I would like to have a Minecraft tournament at Epic. This would do nicely.
Flamers/trolls?
Flamers gunna Flame

Because you clicked on "New Conversation" from the home page and it defaults to Hardware. You simply forgot to set the topic to Minecraft. Glad to see it made it to the correct Topic. :-D
As for spawning, there are numerous mods that allow group based spawning. Everyone could be on an individual group, and each group can be set to spawn in specific areas. So you can space them out accordingly.
Also another idea that could represent the parachutes, there is another mod I was looking into called Treasure Hunt. You can set a specific radius (min/max) where chests with randomized values will spawn on a timer. You set items to have a value, and chests to have a min/max value of items. A location is selected randomly, a rarity of chest is randomly selected, then it is filled with items until it gets within the chest's value. Which would give another thing for them to fight over.
You can also easily set up pitfalls with pistons, TNT landmines, arrow launchers and what not with redstone to automatically trigger.
Specifically content mods. Once a survival server gets past the point of survival being difficult (maybe 3 hours with a large group of people) a lot of the appeal drops out for me. You can only go spelunking so many times before you want something more.
I would totally be interested in either participating in something like this or testing/researching mods/testing mods/etc.
So far, I have @d3k0y, @TiberiusLazarus, and @Tushon looking at helping. For the next two weeks, I'm essentially unemployed, so I'd like to get a raring head start on this. I'll shoot you guys a PM.
First off, thanks; second off, you know if you're in the testing team, you won't be able to fight, right? :P
Though I haven't seen hunger games >.>
Steps 2 - ∞ do not matter all that much.
We were thinking <60 minutes as a "soft cap" (i.e. we'd be forcing players together via environmental hazards if they tried to turtle up), but we can make that happen more quickly if the schedule dictates. We do not necessarily anticipate this being a spectator event beyond those who participate hanging around to see the victor
What Tushon said, but it might be wise to tack a little free time on the end, if we can spare it. We've got a lot of stuff in general that will force people together, but I don't want to be too heavy handed about it.
By the way, if we get a ton of people in on this, we might need to run the games more than once to find a victor. If we don't have time to do that, let me know and we'll expand the field as needed.
