I have officialy entered a new realm of PC case absurdity

Could only find one "normal" (and I use the term loosely) case big enough to jam in my MSI k8d master and have room for a normal amount of hardisk and cdroms... And it was $240.... Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....

So I got a Lubic kit. My mind is spinning with the possibilitys.... The box said I was only limited by the boundaries of my mind and imagination. And as most of you that have known me will testify .... my mind doesn't have boundaries as such... nor "fences"... or most the fence is down the majority of the time allowing thought to run free......

I'm thinking trying the airplane for starters but more then likely I'll branch it off into something more abstract. I am starting to collect lights and clear plastic for more panels and stuff.

I wanted one bizarre showy case to explore design limits and I think the Lubic is the answer. Can't believe I never saw or heard about these suckers before.

Here is some pcis sorta. Its like a framework thing you can build a jillion ways. A union of tinker toys, erector sets and PC cases.

The parts are realy cool aluminum like struts that are just killer.

They have some kits like the airplane one. You can make them like roll around carts or whatever else your sick mind can dream up. here is some just to give you an idea.

I'll post pics after I get mine together.

awesome. that's really really cool, it would require minimal cooling.

Yeah, I've seen these beforeon these boards, or maybe another forum also, or both. They looked really damned cool

You could've gone for an AMS-CF1100S, which is the only case I could find to house my K7D-L that was not INSANELY expensive.

    http://servercase.com/miva/miva?/Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SC&Product_Code=CK1100&Category_Code=ALS

That being said, the Lubic is looking better every day- especially since I've run out of room for regular cases. I've been thinking about buying 4 or 5 of the largest kits they sell and building one Mongo-Size (TM :D) case to hold all of the computers...

No the k8d is way wider then the msi k7d. I can rack the msi k7d and still house all the normal cdroms etc into the rack cases I been useing. The k8d is 13" wide from the io-sheild side and I would have to dremel and hack the case to crap to even get one cdrom.

frys has 30 or more cases in a row and walking right down the line with a tape measure showed I had one Thermaltake full tower with teh HD's mounted sideways that would take even two cdroms. It was nice but... I ain't paying 140 bills for a case that I would replace the PSU in... no how.... no way pard'nah.

Tex, yeah... the K8D is e-atx, the K7D is standard ATX, but the CF-1100 will take E-ATX w/o a problem. Take a look at the link. Regardless, the Lubic sounds great... I just wish it were a little cheaper. $100/set for the largest set is a bit steep.

a killer mid tower is that much around here without shipping. A killer tower is twice that?

I had stock piled 600 watt psu's for just this occasion

And right now I am on the fence. I am leaning toward a roll around test case type thing with the MB on top for easy access etc..

I can see so many uses for that type of setup long term.

The possibilities boggle even my mind.

I think some guys are more meant for standard cases. The fit and finish of the parts is very very good in my opinion. I have a buddy though thats gonna take some parts to work for some very exact cutting. I didn't want to hack them with a dremel cutter or anything and he has access to some really cool gear to fabricate stuff at his work.

I sorta decided on a way oversized rack setup to match my current gear.

Geeky, what you need is a blade rack and some blade cases, 4U or 8U blade cases.... :D

Geeky thats weird and awesome in its own way all in one.

Can you imagine a huge setup with 4 motherboards in a huge Lubic setup?

But really... you need to think about a rack setup.

Heh. Yeah, I'm thinking about a rack, actually. It has the added advantage of security when I go to college. Those enclosed 15u cabinets weigh like 200lbs. Add a few steel 4u cases full of drives and stuff, and I'd pay good money to see someone try to walk off with it. ;D

I got a Lubic Airplane today at Frys, though I'm not building the airplane. That's just the kit with the most parts (and also the only one I could get in town).

Mine's going to be a massive cube but with the power supply/drives underneath and the motherboard in a tray on top, for easy access to motherboard components.

Right now I've got the cube shape made, the PSU mounted, and a 3x5.25" drive cage from a dead 486 that accepts drive rails. I'll make the motherboard tray tomorrow and mount my brand spankin' new MSI K7D Master dual 1900+ in it, then let it fold some. The nice thing is that it gives me something to do with the pile of cases from dead 486's I've got, since I can pull all the drive cages out and start bolting them on wherever.

    My thoughts on Lubic:
Everything is well made, but I still gave myself a cut on one of the sliders :sawed:. The rails are beveled so it's hard to cut yourself on those. You'll want to get a little plastic bead organizer or part organizer to hold all the screws and sliders, because they go everywhere. Never start sliding in spare sliders until one end of the rail you're putting them on is anchored, otherwise the rail will slip and all the sliders you just spent 5 minutes sliding on are going on the floor :werr:. When you start cussing, find something else to do for an hour. :rarr:

www.svc.com had the airplane model yesterday for $129.99+
I can't begin to build something my 1 yr old or cat will get in to ...and believe me they'd both race straight to it.

And Robin swears once you have had to build Barbie Dream houses on Xmas eve in a time crunch all this Lubic PC crap is so easy in comparison. The Barbie house crap really didn't even fit together at times and you had to somehow make a pile of plastic pink pieces into a "dream house" in a few hours.... without power tools... Or duct tape or JB Weld... (grin)

You know sometimes I really envy that lady... You take away my duct tape and JB Weld and I'm cooked.

On the plus side the airplane comes with three acrylic trapezoidal fins that you're supposed to use for the airplane's tail, but would look much better epoxied to a mid-power rocket. That's after I cut a wedge airfoil onto it.

All my plastic is wasted. I built another design and have a huge sheet of acylic to cut for the drives and cdrom bays and the MB thing didn't fit anyway.

It looks like I will use a pull out drawer out of a older case I had laying around to mount the motherboard anyway so the cards will be screwed down tight.

One more trip to Home Depot for some Aluminum and I think I'm almost done. (long sigh...) The kit you could of finished in a couple hours but I was making something on wheels that had to fit my rack also so the dimesions were very very tight... And I didn't have the proper equipement to make the cuts so I had to measure... mark.... and pass it on for cutting... Takes way longer that way trust me. (grin) Have one more round of painting some of the added aluminum parts before I post some early pics and before I start adding the acrylic skin.

To tide you guys over, here's a few pics of mine.

Note the drive cage did not come with the Lubic; it was scavenged from a dead 486. If you must know, the 486 Overdrive and floppy drive came from the same dead 486, and yes that is a working 486DX4.

The machine on top is my Asus P2B-DS sans CPU's, GeForce 3 Ti500, and 256MB of Micron Registered ECC PC100. If you look very closely, you can see my Antec True480 peeking out from behind the drive cage. I haven't quite figured out how to mount expansion cards just yet.

The machine in the black Chieftec on the left is one of my Macs, a Umax S900 w/ 900MHz PowerPC 750FX (G3).
