XP detecting TWO 9800 PRO cards, AGP speed set to 0 – need help!

edited February 2004 in Hardware
I just got my Sapphire RADEON 9800 PRO ATLANTIS.
Previously I had GF4 Ti4200.
I uninstalled nVidia drivers, took Ti4200 out, put 9800 PRO in, booted up…

Here’s where the problems began.
  • Problem 1:
For some reason Win XP keeps detecting two video adapters wt_f.gif

I then installed latest Catalyst drivers (4.1 I think) and no matter what I do system still thinks I got two video adapters.

If I delete/uninstall it from Device manager it will re-detect it again (Found New Hardware dialog)
The only thing I was able to do is Disable one of them in Device manager.

  • Problem 2:
My AGP speed is set to 0 and I can’t seem to be able to change it.
CATALYST has a tab where you can alter AGP speed, then it reboots and determines what’s the max safe AGP speed (and reverts to it)

Well I tried setting 4X (which is what I think my AGP port is capable off – according to Sandra program anyway).
After I rebooted it was set back to 0.

Any ideas?? :confused2 :confused2 :confused2
Please help!

Thanks.

uuuuhh, maybe the card is bad? otherwise, you might want to download detonator destroyer, perhaps you have bits of the old nvidia still around causing havoc.

Well the card seems to work fine.
I just don’t understand why Windows XP detects 2 cards?

Also I used Driver Cleaner to clean the drivers, is that the same thing as detonator destroyer?

    Anybody else?

i'm sure it's similar enough. but just try the det destroyer just in case. If it works, I say leave it alone.

It detects 2 on everyones I believe. For dual monitor support? *shrug* It shows "9800 pro" and "9800 pro secondary" right?

Also, if you set your agp speed in your BIOS to 8x, it will prolly fix that other issue. (unless it already is set to 8x, then idk what to tell ya)

    Yep, exactly!

    Doh!
Do I feel stupid now. So I should leave the second one enable then, correct?

    Thanks a bunch!!!!

It should work the same enabled/disabled as long as you are using only one monitor. I like to disable it just to be safe, my onboard geforce mx at work likes to switch to dual monitor display sometimes, it kinda gets annoying. Although, I never had a problem with the Radeon doing that, so I guess its just preference. Unless someone knows something more about it and wants to share :)

I can’t find a setting for AGP in the bios
(I have DELL Demension 4500 series desktop)

those brand name boxes usually don't have those kind of performance options. try to benchmark it with 3dmark and see what results you get.

    http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-121.zip

DL and run that. Goto the mainboard tab and look at the AGP settings. If it says 8x, you are good to go!

Will do. Is there some kind of reference I can compare with to know if I’m on par with expected performance??
    Link doesn’t work :(

    Thanks.

don't know what the rest of your computer looks like, but i'd guess somewhere in the 15000-19000 range. that's with the 2001 version. with 2003, it will probably be 4000-6000 range i'd guess.

Thanks - I'll give it a shot when I get home.

Just checked the link, works for me. *shrug*

P.S. The rest of the computer:

    Dell Dimension 4500 series
    P4 2.4GHz 512 cache 533Mhz bus
    512 MB RAM (266 MHz – f**king Dell)
Sapphire RADEON 9800 PRO ATLANTIS 128MB
    60Gig HD (ATA/100)

That’s all relevant info I can think of…

    Croc,
    Now it worked – weird

    Thanks.

that 266 mhz is exactly right for the cpu you're running. in order to run in sync, you just need 266*2 which happens to equal 533. so you're all good there, having faster memory wouldn't help you a bit (memory with better timings on the other hand...)

No actually the front bus is 333Mhz.
I thought I was getting 333Mhz ram as well (it was very misleading on DELL site:rant: ), but alas :bawling:

No the FSB (In Mhz) for your CPU is 133mhz. Pentium 4 are Quad pumped (Clock x4) ie. 133 x4 = 533. You may have DDR333 but it is only operating at DDR266 (DDR = Clock x2) speed.

    You would need a dual channel capable mobo (i865PE or i875P chipset) with 2 matched sticks of memory (2 sticks of DDR266/333/400 ) for full P4 CPU/memory Bandwidth (2x DDR266 = P4 533)

Using Single channel DDR with a P4 cripples its performance.

    OK, I just ran 3DMark ’03.

It’s a free version, so it was the default (1024x768) mode.
I only got 2468, however I had my AA at 4x and AF at 8x (as usual)

Was I supposed to turn those OFF for the test or does it matter?

    Thanks.

Off. 1024x768, 32-bit color, aa and af off.

Usually its run with everything set to performance. you should try that, then try it set to balanced.

    OK, thanks.
    I'll re-try tonight again.

BTW: that proggie CPUZ shows the entire Mainboard tab greyed out.

I ran SANDRA and it shows my AGP as capable of 1x 2x and 4x, but says it's currently OFF/1x.

    WTF?
