My RA wants me to spec a computer out for her under the following conditions:

Fast (duh ;))
Very Good sound card
Decent vid card
80 gb hd

She's a musician...and I assume she's gonna do some audio processing stuff on it...

under $800, including flat panel monitor.

I doubt it's gonna happen for under $800 if she wants a pro-level audio card. I'll see what I can find, though.

    Good sound, on board SoundStorm
    Real good sound, major bucks

That and $500 for a decent 17" flat and your budget is in trouble.

One of the cheapest, yet still decent low-end pro audio cards:

it's about $200.00.. If you spend less than that, you're not getting pro audio.

Find out what she means by "good" - is she serious - (i.e, is she going to be recording on her computer or not) - if she's going to be recording, she needs pro audio and low latency storage bus and chances are she's gonna have to sacrifice the flat panel. I'm sorry, but I build pro audio computers as part of my core business and I can tell you right now that she is not gonna get pro audio for an $800.00 with a flat panel.

I also recommend SCSI instead of SATA, but this is not within her budget.
