Another 9800pro thread

edited February 2004 in Hardware
Alright, decided to update my system all at once. So I go out and buy an Asus P4C800 Deluxe mobo, Intel p4 3.0Ghz, 1024mb ddr pc3200 dual channel samsung ram, and an Asus Radeon 9800pro 256mb.

Everything else works fine, however the video card seems to not like to play nice. In any resolution except 1280x1024 it looks okay (after benchmarking with 3dmark2001se and only getting 11500, I think its safe to say something is wrong), but when in 1280x1024 i get these small thin lines going across the screen horizontally, they're not moving or anything. It looks as if the refresh rate is way down (and for some reason, unless I uncheck the "Hide modes this monitor cannot display" box, I can only choose 60hz.

I need some help, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and btw, I'm new to the boards... hiya.

What did you upgrade from, and did you do a clean install of windows after the upgrade?
  • edited February 2004
Yes, I did a clean install of windows after the upgrade.

    I upgraded from a Geforce ti 4200 128mb

hmm. Ok, so it can't be a driver conflict with the old card, or a windows issue (at least it's not likely)... What version of ATi's driver are you using?
  • edited February 2004
The latest from their site (Catalyst Windows XP 4.1 version: 6.14.10.6414), I also tried the Asus ones that came with the card on CD.

Hmm. Well, it sounds like it's probably a card issue, to me. However, what size and brand of power supply are you using to power all this, and what is your cooling setup like?
  • edited February 2004
    Antec 400w Power Supply

Cooling is all standard for an antec case, however I am using a Thermaltake Spark 7+ heatsink / fan for the processor. The video card has its standard 2 pounds of copper wrapped around it, heh.

I assume you have the same Antec case that has become so popular (the SX10x0 series; 4 CD bays, 2 floppy bays, 4 hard drive bays)?

The power supply certainly isn't the issue then, and I doubt cooling is, unless you've got a small SLK-1600 with an upgraded power supply or something :)
  • edited February 2004
Yes, that same antec case :)

Fyi I've tried it in a computer running an older intel board (not old, just older than mine) and a 2.5ghz p4, and I get the same results... I'm thinking it's a card problem and I'm gonna have to RMA it.

Yeah, if you've tried it in another computer, and it's still doing it, it's the card. Even ASUS makes mistakes sometimes :D RMA it. I dunno where you bought it from, but ASUS's RMA department has always been great to me...

    //Edit

BTW, if you've got $40 or so to spare, go to newegg and pick up 4 Thermaltake SmartFan2 80mm case fans, or 5 if you've got one of the Antecs with the side panel fans. They're the absolute best 80mm fans on the market, bar none, and you'd be well advised to upgrade your case cooling a bit. A 9800 Pro and 3GHz P4 is a lot of heat for two 30cfm fans to deal with.

Hm, I'll look into that. Thanks.

Looks like I'll be RMAing it soon then *sigh*. I'll update when I get the new one. Hopefully saying that it no longer does the lines :)

I bought the exactsame card, Asus 9800 pro 256. I thought my 3dmark score was kind of low. Heres my specs:

    Athlon 1800+ @ 1610 (140x11.5) - Palomino agoia y
2x256mb Samsung pc 2100 (not sure of timings)
    Asus 9800 pro 256 @ 391/702
    Abit NF-7 S
    WD 8mb 7200rpm 200gb SATA
    8X dvd +/- rw
    52x cdrw
    Enermax 550w Copper Shielded
    Win2k sp4
    DX9.0b
    Cat 3.8
    latest forceware
    slk800u w/ ttsmf2 on the cpu
    stock cooling on the vpu
    case =2x ttsf2 intake, 1x ttsf2 out, 1x generic 80mm out

    Final Score: 3872

Should I be getting a higher score? This is on a fresh install of ole Windows by the way.
  • edited February 2004
That seems low to me. Prior to this I had an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ as well with a Geforce Ti4400 128mb, and I got prolly mid ot high 8,000s with it.

Are you sure you're using 3Dmark2001se and not 2003? The latter is much more intense.

No I am using 2k3, sorry I did not specify that. If I was getting 3872 in 2001 id go back to my tnt2
