Detroit Accommodations

It seems like finding hotels to stay has been a hot topic since ICHQ moved to Detroit. How about we all give feedback and approximate prices, accessibility, etc. for the places people have stayed around town to help out others who don't stay at ICHQ but also don't want to be more than 20-25 minutes away from the house.

LaQuinta in Warren has been great, @Thrax and I stay there for every event, 15 minute drive from the house. $110 for the entire weekend (2 nights). Comfy beds, and Taco Bell close on the way home ;)

For starters, I stayed at the Roberts Riverwalk Hotel for ICSP this year. It was definitely overpriced for the place. It looked cool and historic and romantic, on the water, etc., so I thought I would give it a shot. It is about $120-150, near Atwater Brewery (a plus), parking was free, but a weird industrustrial area, about 5 miles away from ICHQ (not bad, but you have to drive through downtown, making it a longer drive). They also are a bit disorganized there, and were confused on what hotels were available when people were checking out. It is also a residence, so it can be interesting. I was okay with the hotel, until I had to take a shower (showerhead was low, couldn't make it any other temperature other than scorching hot, and it was screaming at me and spraying me like a high powered garden hose). Overall, I think there are some better options downtown for the price.

Almost everyone who stayed in hotels near the old ICHQ in Warren is familiar with LaQuinta, though. Looking for "Detroit" accommodations for people who want to stay closer to ICHQ2 in case they want to drink and cab back to their hotel.

I haven't stayed in these, but would like to in the future. There are some bed and breakfasts in Detroit!

The Inn on Ferry Street (near the Detroit Institute of the Arts), and 3.5 miles from ICHQ (40 different rooms to choose from, and they have a free shuttle service within a 5 mile radius, and excellent reviews on Yelp). Their rates look like they start around $150/night, which is on par with most of the nice hotels downtown Detroit.

Winder Street Inn is less than 2 miles from ICHQ. Rates start at $139/night. Here is their profile on Yelp, too.

Negative response on the Corktown Inn.

Saw something on the AC unit:

There was also a used towel in the bathroom when we walked in.

Courtyard Detroit Dearborn (5200 Mercury Drive, Dearborn), $99-119 per night, 8 miles, 10-20 minute drive depending on traffic.

Great hotel, friendly staff, WiFi works, very clean. This looks like it'll be my go-to place for future events.

And, don't forget the line of mold going down the whole length of one corner of the room.

Super 8 has beds. They've treated me nice over the years. They also seem to be all over the place. The breakfast might be a little lacking though, depending on your taste. I personally love donuts and coffee, but some people may want a bit more than that. Also, the last one I stayed in (don't remember which one) had it's own guard patrolling the area, so they feel quite safe.

@malia @cannonfodder in all seriousness - did you check for the signs of bedbugs?

@annes There were so many things grossly wrong with the room, I didnt even start to check. Luckily, we never brought our suitcases into the room.

It depends on what you're looking for. Blackhawk and I started out at ICHQ and were told by Prime that it was 120 degrees in the attic. Step 1: find a cheap hotel ASAP. Followed Brian's recommendation of the Corktown Inn where we acquired a room with a king size bed for 50 bucks a night. Sold. We got to the room and the AC didn't work properly. Complained twice and were given a room with a double bed. Complained again and finally got the King size bed with AC. Then I come here and see Cannonfodder and Malia's thread. Disgusting. Kept reading and found Annes' reccommendation to check the room for bed bugs. I immediately checked the room for bedbugs and found no sign of the creepy crawlies. Thank goodness. So, all in all, Corktown is not even remotely close to paradise, but it'll do fine for us.

@kimono54 would rather get shot in a crappy motel than sleep in that oven of an attic. ;D

It actually isn't hot at all in the attic.

Open hooking might be a plus for Corktown.

My Corktown single room is okay so far, but I think next year I would probably get a better hotel and split it with somebody for the same amount as I'm paying now.

Hoping for more AC and showers next year to make hotels a non-issue.

apparently phones and/or keys in the same pocket as the corktown room cards will wipe them. at least the person at the front desk helped out quickly

For the record, they went in the attic before I even opened the windows. :p

The attic was actually cold... I had to find another blanket night before last.

The Courtyard Dearborn wasn't bad at all, aside from one rickety elevator at the corner of the building where we stayed. It was about 15 minutes from ICHQ.

Corktown Inn straight up sucks. Cheap and works in a pinch, but I wouldn't go out of my way to stay there again.

I was not expecting much from Corktown and was not let down. For the cost I was happy with the stay. I was only in the room for about 8 hrs max per day. For $70 a night split and only being about 5 minutes from ICHQ very desirable. I am not able to swing, right now, much about $40-$45 a nite and being close to ICHQ made Corktown a good fit. I made at least 3 trips to Corktown a day which was fine with a 10 min round trip. I used about a 1/4 tank of gas all week so THAT was good too.

So... if we can get a room for about $45 a night per person and be within 5-7 minutes away, I'm for it for next year.

Once I got into a room that was actually ready, and looking past the night clerk and probably (read: definite) hooking (which may be a convenience), it was fine for me and proximity was nice. Will probably split casino or stay at house for future events as possible.
  • ardichokeardichoke Icrontian
Where was this convenient bulk rate hotel with in-house hooking back in 2010 when I could have made use of such services!

    Thanks, Obama!

Motor City, super nice, comfy and quiet when @thrax and I stayed there

  • WagsFTWWagsFTW Grand Rapids, MI Icrontian
Motor City is at least $180/night, though...
Looks like some cheaper hotels downtown - like the Hilton Garden Inn or Holiday Inn Express for $100/night
Otherwise I'm kind of looking at a studio apartment in Midtown on AirBnB, and there's also a 2BR on there that could be split with another couple or another person. Hmm...
