How much of a bad idea is driving up to Detroit for New Year?

IMO, it really depends on the weather between you and Detroit. Here in Michigan, the last 3-5 years, it's cold but no snow or ice over New Years. Will it be that way this year? Can't say.
What I don't know is how snowy it is, normally, in southern Illinois/Indiana/Missouri in your path up here.
It used to almost always be shitty on NYE in my 20s/early 30s. You would be anxious to go out and it would either blizzard or freezing rain, several years in a row.

We would be doing Arkansas->Illinois->Kentucky->Ohio->Michigan. Going from Kentucky to Ohio can be nasty since it is through the mountains.

For what it's worth, I drive to Lancaster (8 hours across Ohio/PA) every year for Christmas and rarely have any issues / unfavorable weather. My suggestion would be to keep an eye on the weather and have flexible plans if things go sideways so you're not forced to drive in bad conditions.

Is it even considered a successful IC event if you don't?

If you're eligible for a booster, get it well before ICNY. Like, now.

In for 12/31 - 1/2 x 2 humans and 1-2 dogs, if the dogs are still ok w you @Linc . Would like to stay @ the house. All humans boostered, all dogs properly vaxxed as well.

Ill be there in spirit. 1. Because I cant make it, and 2. Because while I am Vaccinated and INTEND to get the booster, I also have a crippling needle phobia (I mean screaming in a corner bad just thinking about getting stuck with one) and am still preparing to take it. :(
