It’s been a year and a half since 2K Marin first pitched XCOM to a skeptical fanbase, in the form of a first person strategy ‘reimagining’ of the classic X-COM strategy games that found few friends among gamers with 2K’s radical new direction for the franchise—leading some to accuse them of simply stamping the brand onto an unrelated Bioshock clone.
Well it would seem that 2K might actually have taken those complaints to heart when planning the next of the reboots—XCOM: Enemy Unknown. First of all, it’s taking the series back to its strategy roots with 2K touting it as “an action strategy title that will be instantly recognizable to fans of the original X-COM“. Second, it’s being developed by the brains behind Civilization, Firaxis Games, who have promised it will remain “true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers”. Bold words indeed, but then if there is anyone who could make a worthy successor to the X-COM series of old it’s Firaxis. This is definitely one to look out for.
Currently XCOM: Enemy Unknown is slated for a Fall ’12 release but should you need something to occupy yourself until then Steam currently have the original X-COM complete pack on sale for paltry $5.09.
