Bluetooth 4.0 spec finalized

Today the Bluetooth SIG announced that it has completed work on the core specifications for Bluetooth version 4.0. The new specification primarily focuses on reducing power consumption.

“Bluetooth v4.0 throws open the doors to a host of new markets for Bluetooth manufacturers and products such as watches, remote controls, and a variety of medical and in-home sensors,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Bluetooth SIG. “Many of these products run on button-cell batteries that must last for years versus hours and will also benefit from the longer range enabled by this new version of the Bluetooth specification.”

The special interest group says that BT4 is akin to three specifications in one: classic Bluetooth technology, low-energy technology and high-speed technology, all of which can be combined or used separately in devices according to need. For example, the SIG suggests that pedometers and glucose monitors could use the low-energy spec for cost and space savings.  BT4-enabled cell phones might run all three specs to get maximum performance and features while saving energy.

The Bluetooth SIG says that the complete specification will be made available by June 30, 2010, with products to follow in late 2010 or early 2011.
