Diablo III TV spot returns from hell

Diablo III TV spot returns from hell

Blizzard has released a new TV spot for their highly anticipated third-person dungeon crawler, Diablo III:

It’s super dramatic. In fact, it reminds me of the second half of the theatrical trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming sci-fi epic, Prometheus, right down to the epic synth notes at each brief clip.

Trouble is, this is not an epic film from a veteran epic filmmaker—it’s a plodding dungeon crawler with some dark themes. Noticeably missing is any actual look at the gameplay. I’m thinking that most of those glimpses are from the opening cinematic, which players in on the beta and sample weekends didn’t get a chance to see yet, as the game goes directly into the play with no intro.

I’m not sure who they’re trying to appeal to here, since anyone I know who would get psyched up by this is already planning to buy the game. Many have even pre-ordered. Does Blizzard think that there are some folks watching TV somewhere who played earlier Diablo games (thus the lack of need for any gameplay footage or explanation) and loved it, but who have not yet heard that Diablo III is coming out? Or perhaps some non-gamers who will see the ad, and think the game will be this dramatic? Seems unlikely.

Whoever it’s for, I would expect to see it on prime time television over the next few weeks, and perhaps even on Hulu.

I think thats exactly what this is for. And, when you have 30 seconds to pack a visual punch, you dont show little maggot sized character walking around spouting sparks at skeletons. Theres no way you could describe the gameplay in that amount of time.

You have to draw people in and make them want to see more/google it.

TheAlertHusky This is really what diablo 3 needed, I'm not being sarcastic here. I'm serious, it needed an epic trailer like this, I know so many people who weren't even interested in it because the play style is different but they see this trailer and see that the game still has the epic level of the others.

Howdy, Stranger!
