E3 2012: PDP Afterglow headset

E3 2012: PDP Afterglow headset

Performance Designed Products, or as they’re better know, PDP, is the number one selling third-party company for game controllers and communicators. Here at E3, PDP came out swinging and let the world know that they will be releasing a new line of wired and wireless gaming headsets—the Afterglow Wired Stereo Gaming Headset and  Afterglow Wireless Amplified Stereo Gaming Headset.

The Afterglow Headset has a dual suspension headband to help eliminate pressure to the head and ears, a retractable noise-cancelling mic, and wireless technology that eliminates hiss, pops and dropped signals.

The headset will feature large, 50mm Neodymium speakers that sit inside an angled acoustic cavity. The custom designed speakers are calibrated for audio depth, sonic richness and clarity of sound.  The headphones also feature a Smart-Connect Technology that allows the Afterglow Headset to work with any platform without adjusting buttons or switches.

When asked if the headphones were 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1, it was unknown. The headphones have three audio modes:

  • Pure Audio: Enjoy your game audio content in its original form at the at the highest possible quality.
  • Bass Boost: If you appreciate earth-shaking explosions, Bass Boost will give low-end frequencies a boost without losing high-end clarity.
  • Immersive: Introducting PDP’s propietary 3D sound algorithm. With a capable DSP on board, a team of acoustic engineers and artists created this sound mose after extensive research and development. This mode expands the size of virtual environments without distorting the directionality, creating an immersive experience for the listener that’s only one step short of being there.

Bill Otte, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at PDP said,

We’re proud to introduce a product that delivers the highest sound quality in the industry at the most affordable price. Our Team has worked hard to create exceptional sonic technology and combined with the ‘cool factor’ that synonymous with with the Afterglow name”

I tried out the Afterglow headset and I was really impressed with how well the headset fit on my head. As promised, I did not feel any pressure to my head and ears. The dual suspension headband makes it really easy to adjust the headset. I was playing Super Street Fighter IV and it sounded incredible. I heard and felt every punch and kick, which made me feel I was right there watching the match.

PDP plans on releasing the Afterglow Headset in September. The retail price for the Afterglow Wired Stereo Gaming Headset is $59.95 while the Afterglow Wireless Amplified Stereo Gaming Headset is priced at $89.95.

Cliff_Forster Aggressively priced, especially the wireless model. I'm not sure I'm ready to look like I fell out of the grid though.
  2. AlexDeGruven
AlexDeGruven I love PDP's stuff. They always manage to find something unique, and price it so that the people who want it can actually afford to get it.

I might now be in the market for a new headset.
  3. Bandrik
Bandrik I really like my gaming headset—a Plantronics Gamecom series—for its several-hour comfort and decently good audio quality. But while the cord is more then generous, it still manages to snag on parts of my desk when I move around.

I'd love to upgrade to a wireless headset. I'll keep this one in mind. Thanks for the preview, Binh!
  4. Chooch
Chooch I am thinking about getting one for my GF because she HATES her Razer headset.
  5. Mac I was able to listen to the samples at the E3 booth. They were funky as hell...so I will not wear them in public. The lights were not distracting. The 3 sound modes were okay. The surround sound is not true digital surround..meaning it is with the red and white audio plugs. Not the digital optical cable we so love. BUT!The simulated surround sound these headsets have makes it hard to believe they arent digital.
The wireless sounded fantastic! No popping distortion. Even with all of the background noise from the E3 showroom hall, the game audio was clear and detailed. I will be getting a pair for sure! They're going to be like having a fat chick sitting on my face..fun to wear inside the bedroom. But I don't want my friends seeing me doing it.

  8. hmmm Do you know if these headphones will come in any other color aside from blue? and if they are where i can get them?
  9. Annes
Annes Are these things for sale yet? They meet the requirements for a new headset, and I have no shame so wearing them in public isn't a problem.
  10. Chooch
Chooch When I saw them at E3 I believe they had Red, Green and Blue. Not sure if they will release all three at once and according to pdp.com they are on sale now.

Not sure if they are released yet but at pdp.com they said they are on sale now.
