E3: Defiance trailer

E3: Defiance trailer

Trion Worlds has released the E3 trailer for thier upcoming sci-fi MMO, Defiance, which will be played alongside a companion television show on Syfy.

The video, which debuted over on G4 (can you tell?), has a lot of great in-game footage, interspersed with some shots of the actors and production of the television show.

From this video, it looks like the MMO’s gameplay will focus on raids, or at least that’s the feature they want to emphasize. I guess people like raids?

If nothing else, the project is a really interesting one. A television show and video game with interrelated plots, in which one directly affects the other throughout their life-cycle. I hope it succeeds just so that others will give it a try. It leaves me wondering, however, how they’ll be scheduling the show. Will it be year-round, so the game can be constantly synched, or will the game take a break while the show does? Or perhaps they’ll write the show in such a way that a six-month gap in the plot makes sense?

I also wonder how much last-second writing or filming the television show team will be doing. If they really plan to keep up with what’s going on in the game, they’ll need to do a lot, and even be on call for sudden shifts. I guess part of that is mitigated by the geographical separation of the plots. The game takes place in a ruined San Fransisco, while the show will follow the resistance in St. Louis.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in the near future, Defiance introduces a world where humans and aliens must learn to live together on an exotic new Earth that has been transformed by alien terra-forming machines.

Bowler plays Jeb Nolan, the law keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion. Nolan is a former Marine who fought in the alien conflict and suffered the loss of his wife and child in the war. The trauma transformed him into a lone wanderer in the wilds of this new and dangerous world, bringing him to the town where his peacekeeping skills make him a valuable addition this new community.

The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe, evolving together over time to tell an overall story that is more powerful together.

Defiance, the game and the show, are currently planned for a Spring 2013 debut.

midga Looks interesting, and like a decent stand-alone game even without the show. I'd be afraid to try it out, though, being unable to commit to a regular watching schedule or anything.

I've a feeling they'll end up shooting different possible scenarios at game-influenced forks and then televising whichever is appropriate. It's very unlikely the player base will be able to influence the universe beyond the pre-conceived notions of the developers.
