It’s been four years since Stardock’s space-based RTS first delighted gamers, but the franchise is far from dead with the new standalone expansion ‘Rebellion’ going on sale today.
Building on Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity, Rebellion retains the original games’ content but adds everything from new ship variants for each of the new sub-factions to enhanced shading/textures/particle effects. The changes aren’t all cosmetic though, with new capital and super-capital ‘Titan’ warships entering the fray and an entirely new corvette class of ships bridging the gap between frigate and fighter. Also included is a reworked AI to add an extra challenge to single player battles on top of new victory conditions, tech trees and capital ship abilities.
Additional content and gameplay/graphical tweaks aside however, one of the most significant—and most welcome—changes is Steamworks integration, which allows players to use the ubiquitous Steam service for their matchmaking and achievements. As you’d assume, this means Rebellion has followed Trinity onto Valve’s digital distribution service as well as being available from Stardock’s own store.
Those looking to scratch that sci-fi RTS itch, or just give the franchise a try, can pick up a copy of Rebellion now for $40—though owners of previous Sins of a Solar Empire titles should be able to score a discounted $30 purchase through Stardock.
