Dragon's Prophet

Sony Online Entertainment is looking to bring another free MMORPG to the table. This time, you are able to tame and ride dragons in Dragon’s Prophet—but it is not the typical dragons that everyone is used to. In Dragon’s Prophet, the elder dragons bred with other creatures in the world—which allow them to be very different. They are unique in both look and capabilities. There are hundreds of dragons in the world—some run, some fly, some glide and some swim. A good majority of the dragons are tame-able. If, however, you try to tame a dragon that is of a  higher level than you, the difficulty of the taming mini-game will be increased significantly. After you tame the dragon, of course, you are able to ride your dragon and your dragon is able to help you in battle. You are also able to tame the same dragon species and they will have different stats and abilities depending on your class and gameplay choices.

Another cool thing that your dragon can do is complete chores for you while you are playing or offline. You can send your dragon out to collect or mine materials for your crafting. This advantage, however, comes at a price—to send your dragon out will either cost you the in-game gold, or Sony Station Cash. The more hours you send out your dragon, the more currency you will be spending for your dragon go out and seek the materials you require.

There are only four classes that you are able to play in Dragon’s Prophet:

  • Guardian—The Guardian is the only class that can wear heavy armor; this class would be  considered your tank class
  • Sorcerer—Your spell caster that still has the ability to get up close and do damage
  • Ranger—More than just a “bow and arrow” class. Will have the ability to dual-wield guns and have abilities to do damage up close
  • Oracle—A DPS Cleric class

The combat system is engaging, as it should be, and it reminds me a lot of DCUO, but with more ability options. It is pretty basic if you are an experienced MMO player—nothing really new or innovative. What I like, however, is the ability to actually put points where I want them when I level. Also, the Charisma skill points allow you to summon your dragon and determines how long your dragon can be out. Your free account will allow you have a limited numbers of bags and dragon slots, and to unlock them you pay for it with real currency or Station Points. What SOE plans on doing in two or three months is the ability to have aerial combat up in the floating island PvP area—which should be really exciting, and I cannot wait to try it out. You also get to have your own in-game house and decorate it the way you want it.

Overall the game does have potential to be around for a while but is it up for a big challenge to compete with all the larger MMO titles that are out there. There is no solid release date right now, but they are projecting it will be out later this year.
