ICY DOCK crams a bunch of things into a 5.25″ bay

Got a small portable gaming system or HTPC that’s running out of space? ICY DOCK is known for their storage accessories, be it internal expansion or external docks. The company has announced an expansion to one of their product lines to allow you to cram even more things into your already packed system.

The ICY DOCK MB994IPO-3SB is similar to the rest of the brand’s MB994 series in that it uses an aluminum body, interchangeable slide-out hard drive trays, and supports SATA III drives. What sets it apart is the addition of a slot for a slim optical disk drive—the same form factor as a laptop optical drive. Given current laptop hard drive capacities, this means 2TB plus a Blu-ray burner can fit in a single 5.25″ expansion bay.

Key features

  • Fits 2×2.5″ SATA/SAS hard drive or SSD and 1 slim optical disk drive
  • Accommodates hard drives or SSD up to 15mm tall
  • Supports SATA III and SAS 2.0 interface
  • Full aluminum body construction
  • Full metal EZ Slide mini tray and EZ-ODD tray
  • 2×4-pin molex power connection for all components
  • 40mm cooling fan
  • On/Off switch for cooling fan
  • Status LED for each drive
  • Active power technology – Device and fan only powers up if a drive is installed

The ICY DOCK MB994IPO-S3B will be available at the end of July. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Garg That's perfect for my new case. Highly skeptical of ICY DOCK after the old external enclosure I bought from them died, but I might give this a shot.
