It begins: the fourth annual TF2 Scream Fortress event

Scream Fortress 2012Valve released a blog post Wednesday,  giving players their first taste of The Scream Fortress event for 2012. A hidden link on the TF2 home page, a comic and a forum post have all added to the raging speculation of what this year’s event will bring. Let’s take a look at the evidence.

Bloodcurdling Boss

In the new comic “Doom-Mates,” the Soldier’s previous roommate Merasmus is reintroduced. Upon his return from Wizardcon MCLVI, Merasmus is greeted by the Soldier who has turned Merasmus’ castle into a raccoon sanctuary. The situation quickly escalates and Merasmus flips his wig. His ghost is released from his body and threatens to kill everyone the Soldier loves. This points to Merasmus’ Ghost being this years Scream Fortress boss. Knowing Valve, with past bosses including The Horseless Headless Horseman and Monoculous, things are sure to get at least a little more ridiculous.

On the TF2 homepage, the Spy’s head has changed into a terrifying skull and when clicked takes you to a hidden page. The page shows page 87 of The Teufort Reader. In what looks to be classified ads, most of them themed after the evens in the Doom-Mates comic, there are no doubt clues about when this year’s event will start and end, new items and details on the festivities. One fact that stands out is that Wizardcon ends on October 30th, indicating that Merasmus’ ghost could start his killing spree on October 31st, Halloween.

Horrifying Hats

Recently there has been a trend of introducing pets for the TF2 classes. With the raccoons in the comic, and the Soldier actually naming one of them Lieutenant Bites, there is a very good chance the Soldier will be getting a raccoon pet misc slot item during this update. In past Halloween events, each class was given Halloween masks and costumes. Whether they are gifts inside a new level, achievement items, or crate based, we will no doubt get a glut of new Halloween items this year.

The Ghastly Gibus has been part of TF2 Halloween since the Terrifying Team Fortress Haunted Hallowe’en Special in 2009. In each of the years since, the Gibus has been upgraded—first becoming a Ghastlier Gibus and last year the Ghastlierest Gibus. If this continues, what suffix will the Gibus gain this year?

Mysterious Maintenance

In a forum post, Valve employee dberger states that the they will be “performing routine maintenance on some of the Steam servers on Wednesday October 24, 2012.” While this could be completely coincidental, it could also be Valve preparing for Halloween, TF2 Style!

oni_dels ^^ i was gonna lol that comment, but someone screw up in codelines somewhere and now it's gone.

also can't wait for more haloweenie stuff! (oh that didnt sound right...)

last year i got pretty much all the achievements but only 1 piece of costume. this year i have to play non stop!
  4. Icaria I'm more interested in what they do with the haunted metal scrap this year. Last year, they replaced the skull and juju with 3 new skulls. Kind of hoping we see an updated juju (or several) this year.

Also, does anyone remember what the store-bought jujus/skulls cost in USD?

trooster89 I regret crafting the HHH back in '10 after seeing how much the juju is worth now. Who would have guessed such an ugly hat would be worth so much or have predicted how the Mann-conomy would take off.

oni_dels still have my Haunted Metal Scrap(already had a strange eyelander and that skull helm is ugly...), so i'm curious too to see what's new with it, if anything.

Howdy, Stranger!
