New Releases for The Week of Oil and Water

New Releases for The Week of Oil and Water

Oil Rush is another entry in the up-and-coming, unfortunately initialed RTSTD (real-time strategic tower defense) genre. In this one, players control oil rigs in the ruined Waterworld-esque seascapes of future Earth. Players must manage their precious oil while building units to attack their rivals and defenses to ward them off. There is a a lot of focus on the graphics, with everything following a theme of dirty, post-apocalyptic, industrial architecture. Lots of steel and lots of rust. The game hasn’t been announced on Steam, but they have declared that there will be no DRM, and that one key will open up play on Windows, Linux, PS3, and Mac.

In Mutant Mudds, we see some serious use of the 3DS’s stereoscopic abilities. This is a 2D platformer, in which the character can fly among three differnt 2D depths. It looks typical enough as just a standard platformer, but special pads toss the character forward and backward in the level, leaving him sometimes tiny and distant, while sometimes uncomfortably close to the player. The story isn’t much to speak of—little boy with a water gun and jetpack fights mud monsters—but it doesn’t need to be. If you’re still waiting for a compelling use of the 3DS’s capabilities in a 2D platformer, pick this one up.
