Elder Scrolls Hearthfire announcement

Bethesda Software today announced the next DLC add-on for their best-selling role-playing adventure game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

There are plenty of housing options in Skyrim already, depending on your path through the game, but for those looking to turn obtaining that house into a story-line all its own, there is Hearthfire. This DLC adds the ability to purchase land and build a home and a family in a setting away from the bustle of the major cities and guilds.

Players will have the ability, once the land is purchased, to build their manor one room at a time from materials that they either craft themselves or purchase. Some of the rooms and features include an enchanting workshop, an armory, plenty of display cases and plaques, a garden with plants that grow back—only one house in the game currently does this—and even bee houses for farming honeycomb.

As you would expect, one can move their spouse to the manor, and there are several support personnel to hire and manage. In addition, while there is still no baby-making minigame, one can adopt a couple of the many orphans in the game-world, and bring them home to be raised and maintained like a Tamagotchi.

It’s not just the house, however, along the way to mansiondom, there are a variety of extra quests involving the retrieval of rare components and the defense of the homestead from invaders.

This video from Bethesda does a pretty good job of illustrating the new options presented by the DLC:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Hearthfire add-on will be available for download on Xbox 360 September 4th, 2012 for 400 MS points. No release date has yet been announced for Steam.
