For some games, mods are what make the world go round. They can range from the simple mods that help you in your grinding through WoW, to those that provide a modern and smoother look to an old game that you still love.  Then of course there are mods that say “Screw you and your lemons; I am making my own game that replaces your game and will blow your socks off.”

To help bring more great mods to gamers, Valve is releasing a new feature in their Steam Workshop called collections  The idea behind collections is that modders can package their mods together according to what works well as a group.  It can also be used to highlight features and items, but that is not where the real beauty is.

Developers that have changed their favorite game into something truly fantastic can now easily bundle a group of the mods into a single package, and thus provide a fast and easy way for people to join in their ‘game-changing’ experience. This will be a one-stop-shop to completely mod games into something new.

To understand the power of mods, remember that Team Fortress 2, for example, is actually an extremely modded Half-Life 2. A skilled modder (and there are lots out there) can take a game and turn it into an entirely new and wonderful experience. This is now going to be a lot easier with Collections.

Beta testing made simplier by Valve.

ardichoke This is awesome. I hope someone packages some of the Deus Ex graphics mods into a collection. It was a pain in the ass installing those.
