Taking a look at South Park: The Game

Taking a look at South Park: The Game

It seems Obsidian have been working hard on their latest and probably oddest RPG title yet.

If yesterday’s screenshot release is anything to go by, South Park: The Game is certainly staying true to the TV show’s 2D construction-paper design and appears to have succeeded in capturing the distinctive look of both South Park and its quirky residents. Of course these are just stills—the character animations, voices, dialogue and gameplay, although vital to the games success, cannot yet be judged. However, with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone involved in the game’s production, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Taking a closer look at these images you can definitely see how the anticipated turn-based combat could function with two player-controlled characters going up against factions from the show as diverse as the vamp kids, the gingers or every 8 year old boy’s worst nightmare—girls.  The weapons and attacks too are varied—everything from sucker arrows and wooden swords, up to golf clubs and axes are on display, as well as Cartman using what could best be described as a taunt on a hippy.

Though there is really not a massive amount of new information to be gleaned from these images, it is still nice to see how Obsidian are progessing with a game that is certainly quite unlike any of the decidedly more serious 3D RPGs they are used to producing. One thing’s for sure though—everything we’ve seen so far is instantly recognisable as South Park. This definitely bodes well for South Park: The Game which is due for release later this year on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
