With summer coming to a close, many of us are just yearning to squeeze one more outing in. Just one more week at the campground. Another afternoon on the coast, fishing. Maybe a couple days hitting all the good little antique shops in the area. Of course, we’d all prefer another, much larger adventure, but the time just isn’t there.
…or is it?
Enter the Indie Royale Getaway Bundle, a pack of six adventures, little and big, that will let you get that one final outing in. You’ll delve into deep dungeons, and explore even deeper space. You’ll trek across the country in your fancy covered wagon. You’ll solve mysteries with wrestlers, and maybe even fall in love, all from the comfort of your easy-chair.
Here’s a quick breakdown in no particular order:
MiniFlake
MiniFlake (Desura, Direct)(Windows)(ALPHA)
Classic Rogue-like dungeon crawler, wrapped in a pretty 8-bit Classic Fatboy-esque graphical format. Even the controls make you feel like you’re holding that two-pound grey pudgy rectangle in your hands. The big thing to remember, though, is it’s an Alpha, so “unpolished” is the word of the day. It’s still some good fun, though, with something like twelve different classes to pick from, decent stat customization, a sweet looking tile-set and even a neat little fishing mini-game, this has potential to end up taking a few happy afternoons. Just make sure you read the text file called “Controls readme” bundled with it or you’ll be fumbling around like a teenage boy with a bra-clasp.
Da New Guys (Desura, Direct)(Windows)(OST)
I haven’t tried this one yet, but as far as I can tell it’s a classic Point ‘n’ Click adventure game about wrestlers. It looks well drawn and pretty hilarious.
Waves (Desura, Direct, Steam)(Windows)(OST)
There’s a full review of this in the works, but in short, this is an amazing arena-style Two-Stick Shooter. It has a number of different game modes to choose from, including one that doesn’t even allow you to shoot anything (which sounds horribad but is AWESOME). If you’re into 2SS action, this game right here is worth picking up the bundle for alone (except you get five other sweet games with it. Keen!). It’s easily in my top five.
Super Amazing Wagon Adventure (Desura, Direct)(Windows)(Indie Royale Exclusive Debut!)
Oregon Trail meets cocaine-fueled ADHD Atari 2600. Seriously, just watch the trailer. It promises to be an out-west(/space/arctic/…) adventure you won’t forget (or survive). Also it’s hilarious.
Analogue: A Hate Story (Desura, Direct, Steam)(Linux, Mac, Windows)(OST)(DLC)
Described as a Dark Visual Novel, Analogue promises to delve deep into the ideas of tradition and misogyny. In classic Visual Novel fashion, there are multiple (two) ladies you can pursue and multiple (five) endings you can achieve. With the right night and the right wine (or water, or whatever you fill your bladder with), Analogue could leave your books untouched and your mind blown.
Shattered Horizon (Steam)(Windows 7/Vista)(DX10+)
I know for many of you, this is a game that needs no introduction. With Shattered Horizon, our friends at the now-defunct Futuremark Games Studio took the First Person Shooter genre to a whole new level. It’s Zero G. It’s fully three-dimensional. It’s somewhat realistic for bullet-based combat in low-atmosphere conditions. It’s really really hard, and it’s worth playing, especially for this price. If you don’t already own it, do yourself a favor and scoop this one up.
And speaking of Futuremark, they are generously offering some rad loot to the top contributors to this Bundle. For the top ten, they’ll get a swag Shattered Horizons t-shirt. The top five will also get one of the coolest rocks you’ve ever seen. It’s a piece of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite from one of the largest iron meteorite falls in recorded history. They don’t say how big it is, but these things list between $300 and $3000 on Aerolite, so if you like cool rocks this could be a great opportunity to add a FRIGGIN’ SPACE ROCK to your collection. Seriously, how cool is that?
At last glance, the price for this bundle was well under $5.50 and dropping ($8 to get the swell album “Handheld Heroes Volume One”) with four days left to go. The top contributions are currently between $50 and $140, so physical evidence of that awesome space adventure you took at the end of this summer may well be within your reach. As for me, I’ll keep wishin’ I was fishin’.
