Trailer for Marvel: Avengers Alliance puts you in charge

Marvel today released the first trailer for Marvel: Avenger’s Alliance, the comics/movies/video games studio’s first attempt at a Facebook game. Intended to tie in with the upcoming ensemble film, The Avengers, the game allows players to build a team of heroes and develop them, RPG style, by sending them on increasingly more difficult missions, earning them upgrades and skills as they go.

It’s a social game, so expect to compete with friends, or at least have to click on their things, or somesuch mechanic. From the description on the Facebook page, it seems that the maximum power of one’s team members will be determined by the number of friends you have who are playing—the most annoying kind of social gaming mechanic, in my opinion.

The game’s official synopsis is thus:

Marvel Avengers Alliance, Marvel’s first Facebook game coming soon! Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow join forces with Wolverine, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and more to in this new free-to-play strategy game.

Players are recruited as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. to assemble and lead teams of superheroes with a mission to keep New York City safe from the clutches of Marvel supervillains. Train your team to unlock unique abilities and attacks, and customise each character’s stats. Face-off against friends in super-powered asynchronous player versus player battles using your Facebook stats.

Much of the film will revolve around the themes of leadership and teamwork. The heroes will struggle to become a cohesive unit, and their personalities are sure to clash several times along the way, usually humorously. This theme will likely be reflected in the game to some extent.

The Avengers is slated to hit theaters on May 4, 2012, kicking off the summer blockbuster season. Marvel: Avengers Assemble has no announced release date, but interested player can already get in line to play on the Facebook page for the app.
