Why grown-ass men love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic so much

Why grown-ass men love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic so much

By merely reading the title of this piece, I’m willing to bet that you have already experienced a strong emotional response.  Anyone on the internet today knows—My Little Pony is everywhere.  Images of those pastel-colored ponies can be found at every corner of the web—YouTube, imageboards, community forums, emails… You name it, you can probably find some ponies.  It’s a very polarizing subject; you either love it, or you despise it.

So just what is the deal with My Little Pony?  Why do so many people, especially adult-age males, watch and talk about a show that looks like it’s made for little girls?  That very question has been asked on Icrontic numerous times.  Recently, on a news post regarding Friendship is Magic creator Lauren Faust, the question was asked once more.  “Can someone please explain to me why a bunch of grown men have an obsession with My Little Pony?”

With pleasure.  *Cracks knuckles*

Forget everything you know about My Little Pony

Let’s start with the basics: Forget everything you know about My Little Pony. Throw it all away. The series that started in the 80’s, the cartoon that featured overly-cute interactions with ponies, the toy line, the merchandise from Hasbro, and all of the pink, fluffy, cute and adorable things that My Little Pony is synonymous with. Forget it all.

In October of last year, Hasbro created a television network. They named this network Hub, and they made it to air shows that support their IPs. My Little Pony, Pound Puppies, Transformers… it’s all there. These are new shows, of course, with the classic shows from the 80’s nowhere to be seen. JEJAC is the first quintet.

For the new My Little Pony cartoon, Hub brought on Lauren Faust to write and direct. Faust, known for her work on The Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and The Iron Giant, has a reputation for refusing the standards and stereotypes of modern cartoons and shows for girls. Faust has always hated that “girl” equates to “cute, pink, and cuddly” in modern entertainment. Girls never have entertaining shows because they’re always reserved for brushing hair, having makeovers and playing tea party. As a result of her approach, her past projects (Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s, especially) are very gender-neutral. Everyone watched them, everyone loved them, and we weren’t afraid to admit it.

When Faust sat down to work on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, she had a completely clean slate to do whatever she wanted with the IP. Knowing this, she threw out EVERYTHING and started from scratch. She didn’t want this show to pander to typical girl show standards. She wanted something that could be viewed and enjoyed by everyone, regardless of sex or age.

My Little Pony Mane Cast

I mean, what's the deal with ponies? </Seinfeld>

What resulted is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. It’s a character-driven cartoon that focuses more on minor slapstick and absurdity than brushing hair and dress-up time. The show is akin to Dexter’s Lab, Hey Arnold, or Johnny Bravo. It presents characters with real and unique personalities, and it confronts real conflict and real consequence, while remaining light-hearted and fun. It isn’t for girls or children, it’s for everyone.

Now you know what the cartoon is, and that’s half the battle. Here is why grown-ass men enjoy My Little Pony:

Deal with it

It started off as a humorous, culturally ironic thing to do. “LOLOL I WATCH MY LITTLE PONY DEAL WITH IT”. 4Chan spread it, naturally. That’s where I discovered it back in December. But as more and more people talked about the show, people started actually watching the episodes. They discovered the awesome characters and storytelling that was beneath the veil of My Little Pony, and animation buffs and cartoon enthusiasts became hooked.

So people are watching the show and enjoying it. Big deal. Why is it so huge when other cartoons of relative quality don’t? Simple—it’s the community.

Here’s some perspecitve—Icrontic’s community. Anything this community does together, no matter how mundane, becomes an incredibly fun experience. Whether we’re just sitting on Ventrilo and talking to each other, or making crappy MS Paint comics, or playing dumb online Pictionary games together over Skype, these things become awesome because of our community.

The same became true of My Little Pony. A subculture of sorts was created around this cartoon. I liked the cartoon before I discovered the community because I’m an animation nut. I loved the cartoon after I discovered the community and the awesome things they’ve done. 7JV59 is the second quintet.

The amount of content that gets created on YouTube out of this show is staggering. Some of it is absolutely brilliant. People make music, they dub episodes, they remix things, the re-remix things, they create original pieces…. it’s unbelievable. It goes even bigger than YouTube, with artwork, writing (fan fiction—yeah, I stay away from that stuff), custom made toys and plushes… I’ve never seen a group of people rise around something and create content to the extent that the My Little Pony fanbase does.

Furthermore, Hasbro have not only allowed the community to upload ALL of the full episodes of Friendship is Magic to YouTube, but they’ve embraced the community. They’ve given shout-outs to the community in videos and episodes, they’ve made things canon because of fan response (see Derpy Hooves), they’ve sent artists to fan-made MLP cons, and they’ve shown total appreciation for all of the fans. It’s insane. This close relationship with the artists and company and fans has created an incredible atmosphere and has only helped boost popularity of the show.

Rainbow Dash Face Squeeze

Rainbow Dash is best pony.

Icrontic has a large group of fans of the show. TY0YJ is the third quintet. We talk about it, a lot.  We also have regular Synchtube viewings of Friendship is Magic episodes that average 15 viewers for 4+ hours.  The stream events are some of the most fun times I’ve had with Icrontic since we got into Team Fortress 2.  When you sit on Ventrilo with 15 other close friends while laughing at a cartoon and enjoying drinks together, you realize that My Little Pony is more than a cartoon—it’s a community event that in its simplest form brings smiles to all of our faces.

I like watching My Little Pony. Not afraid to say it. We get ragged on simply because of the name of the show. It’s no different than nerds that go to Star Trek conventions, or people who form teams and play video games professionally, or film buffs who are at the cinema three times a week making podcasts about what they saw. It’s a thing, people like it, and they’ve formed a collective community around it, and that simply makes it awesome.

FreshyP Dude, you tell 'em Bobby. I was having this issue in school where everybody thought I was really weird, until, they actually got into the show. And It took a while, but I got my best friend into the show too.
  2. Cliff_Forster
Cliff_Forster I'm Bobby's muse! I suddenly feel like an inspiration.

The Iron Giant, absolutely love it, a modern classic. Powerpuff Girls, I found that to be innovative when it came out, I've seen a number of those and while it's not so much for me, I will say I can see where you are coming from in regards to traditional gender roles, the style of animation, the short form story telling and such.

I appreciate you going into such detail to educate me. Honestly, I had no idea 4Chan started this. I had no idea how pervasive its become across the internet. I just assumed it was an Icrontic inside joke that I was not understanding.

That said, I'll record a couple on HUB and watch with my daughter. I did not know much about Lauren Faust until now, but looking at her back catalog of work I've enjoyed various things she has been associated with.

    Thanks again for the explanation!
  3. UPSLynx
UPSLynx No problem Cliff. It had to be said, really. I get that question all the time, and I can't blame people for asking. I mean, I have the DVD collection of a 5 year old, so people aren't surprised when I get into animated films or shows. But MLP has become a phenomenon, and it confuses a lot of people. BobbyDigi was the same way in our Images of overloads of ponies thread - once he realized we weren't sitting around watching the show from the 80's, a lightbulb went off in his head.

I didn't get it, either. I frequent 4Chan /co/ (Comics and Cartoons) because it's worksafe and less suck than the rest of 4chan. In December, they started talking about MLP, and I thought it was trolls trolling trolls. I stuck around enough threads to finally work up the curiosity to watch a few episodes and became hooked. So did quite a few IC members, because once Cola started that thread, everyone came out of the woodwork to talk about ponies. It's just one of those things.

Yeah, it toally sucks like that at first. It's too taboo in modern culture for dudes to like cartoons, and it's even worse when that cartoon is percieved to be made for girls. I still have to explain it to many who think its weird, but I've gotten to a point where I don't really care anymore.

Canti Everything that's happened here because of MLP:FiM pleases me greatly. I'm so proud of you all. Also, directly to Cliff, I've read from Lauren Faust herself that one of the things she's happiest about with this series is how fathers enjoy watching this show with their daughters. I hope you do this and have friendship is bonding time with your daughter, it's really pretty entertaining.
  10. Thrax
Thrax My first impression of MLP was that it was a lot like Powerpuff Girls, a show I love. Which, of course, explains why I love MLP, too. I never discovered the link until many months later.

  19. BornIn1142
BornIn1142 Frankly, I find it flat-out wrong to say that the show isn't for little girls. It was designed to be enjoyed by everyone else as well, but I think it's pretty damn important to make the distinction. Faust's attempt to produce good and substantive entertainment for little girls is a huge part of the show's identity. The feminist intent behind it is obvious and undeniable. The show is, first and foremost, for little girls. It's more than a little disingenuous of the grown-up fans to hijack it for ourselves, simply because we're the most visible section of the viewership.

Luna-tic Scientist Don't read fanfic huh? I didn't either until until I got hit in the brain by Fallout: Equestria. I find it a little disturbing that I've not read a 'real' book for almost half a year - the sheer quantity and quality of what's available has made it impossible (and I'm someone who gets through a book a week).

You are spot-on about the community; that's what pulled me in and that's what keeps me here.
  32. Tigerheart
Tigerheart I'm in the military. I'm in a combat MOS. I discovered the show after returning from afghanistan.

  33. The Bronze Gryphon
The Bronze Gryphon I watched a retrospective of G1-G4 MLP, and I have to say, I'm actually a little tempted to watch some of G1... but not any of the rest of it until G4 which I already adore. What can I say, I really love cheesy 80s cartoons (I may or may not own all the Thundercats DVDs). But as a self-admitted brony, I say this: if it's got Pixar-deep characters, Warner Brothers slapstick, and Dungeons and Dragons-esque adventures to defeat giant beasties, how can you not like it?

And Applejack is the best pony. She won the Prize Pony of Ponyville award. Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

However, the G3.5 chibi show and newborn ponies show are every bit as terrible as you might have heard.

Gel It´s just a part of moe culture. Silly people, just like K-on and Lucky star etc, it´s not about the show being great. The show is great, but the key thing is the fact it´s moe. Aragrist Why do so many ponies crap on the Fan Fic? I personally think that a lot of the fan fic is actually better than the show's stories. Some is so epic that I feel it should be required reading in high school and college. Out of the three arts that have spawned from MLP I think Fiction writing is top fallowed by Music and then art. Though you have to realize that the artwork is about 1000% better than what I see in most other fandoms. Just my opinion.

Fanfics are a mixed bag. There's good ones, in which it's subjective to the tastes of each reader, and then the bad ones- which tend to apply negative stigma to the concept and keep people away from the good ones.

There ARE good ones out there. if I had to recommend an MLP fanfic, the only one I've really bothered to read that was pretty good was the "Progress" series, which mostly dealt with the subject of Princess Luna trying to acclimate to modern-day living after being stuck on the moon for 1000 years. It's handled pretty well, actually

    Beyond those, I can't say.
Though my favorite form of media that the fans seem to crank out is the music, especially since the quality has been getting a LOT better lately.

Not to invoke hate comments though. I just dislike the show, not hate it. AND IT WILL NEVER REPLACE MLP.
  75. NigNog
NigNog "When Faust sat down to work on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, she had a completely clean slate to do whatever she wanted with the IP. Knowing this, she threw out EVERYTHING and started from scratch. "

Yes... Except of course, the FiM pilot being practically a re-imagining of the G1 cartoon pilot (Return to Midnight Castle), and the entirety of the FiM main cast being based on - in fact, in some cases, effectively transplanted (Applejack -> Applejack, Firefly -> Rainbow Dash...) - from previous MLP cartoon series.

FiM is an EVOLUTION of the franchise that draws heavily from the two G1 cartoons in particular. It did NOT start as a blank slate by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm actually plotting out a search-and-recruit brony op at my school using fliers that use subliminal means (eye-catching colors) in order for one to notice.
My theory is that if someone notices the huge colored Rainbow Dash more conciously than others, as in recognizing it, they will most likely email me the answer to the question "who can clear the sky in 10 seconds flat?".
It's mostly mind games, but I'll archive names and set a day for all of us to meet somewhere, whether it be in school or otherwise.

Wait, what's wrong with the fanfic? Some of this stuff is so awesome, it's not even funny. And not just because it's sad-themed. :( I just finished chatting with the author of "My Little Dashie" which is much too sad, but awesome. You may have seen the comic that inspired it, a filly Rainbow Dash sitting in a "Free 2 a Good Home" box. But it actually makes you think, which is nice. I'd suggest reading it. Another good one is "Heart of Gold, Feathers of Steel" which is an alternative viewpoint to episode 5, and actually makes sense of Gilda and makes you feel sorry for her. Surprisingly.

  81. UPSLynx
    UPSLynx Regarding Fanfictions:

I don't read them because they are, if you'll excuse the term, a complete mess to the outside observer. If you don't know where to look, it's not only intimidating to try and get into to, but it can also suck because of all of the extra crap that you don't really care about.

See, I like canon. I like that professional storytellers put reason behind the stories they tell in episodes. I like that it is consistent. While fanfiction can be written incredibly well by a talented writer, it generally clashes with canon simply because it doesn't have any choice. That bugs me.

To be honest, though, my biggest reason for not reading fanfiction is all of the sex. I know that romance is part of any good story, but the abundance of viciously descriptive sexual encounters in most fanfiction is an immediate buzzkill for me. Mainly because sex does not belong in the My Little Pony universe. It is pretty difficult to find good fanfiction (in any fandom) that doesn't dish out some sexy times. I've been in the Sonic fandom since the Genesis days, and that fandom is one of the worst I've seen. It pretty much ruined me on fanfics.

I have read 'Our Last Goodbye' and 'Friendship is Tragic' (And Cupcakes for LULZ). I enjoyed them, especially because I'm a sucker for sad stories. The sex annoyed me in Our Last Goodbye though, despite the fact that it is very, very limited in the grand scheme of things. I just don't care for it. I almost stopped reading because of it.

I'm not vehemently opposed to it. If someone can point me to some well-written fanfics that don't down in needless sex or violence, then I'm down for it. Recommendations would be welcome, considering I don't have a chance trying to dig into it myself.

Skoasha Trust me, and read Past Sins. You won't regret it, i feel that it's the best fan-fiction of all time. Also Worst Bakers in Equestria for Comedy.

Never read it myself. Been hearing both good and very ugly things about it.

Responses literally range from "best FiM fanfic yet" to "it's the 'Twilight' of the MLP fandom".
  85. BronyumHex
BronyumHex To me it matters not who is the best pony, only who you like the most, for me that's Derpy id spend the rest of my life by her side if i could but that's lucid dreaming. The Brony community is one of the widest ranging and most awsum out there, its almost at the point that i can almost claim "its dwarfing the sonic movement", with every episode there is, within minutes of it airing there is a tidal wave of new fan works based off it making this the fastest moving communities too. in fact it was the community who made me a Brony, tho i must give a shoutout to Renard for his mashup of winter wrap-up and the front titles "rainbow dash likes girls "stay gay pony girl"" for showing me of the existance of our favourite Equestrians *i was living my life unaware of true power of friendship until then* and without it i would still be out of the loop and hating life in general, the fandom has changed my view of life for the better and for that i must thank you all. Haters gonna hate but we Bronys will be always be bro's and that's why im proud of being a Brony and will be till i die. BTW if you are looking of a good fanfic check out "my little Dashy" just make sure you have a box of tissues nearby...

    Rant over
  86. waffle911
waffle911 Well, on Equestria Daily, all of the stories go through pre-readers, so they're pretty much guaranteed not to be a horrible pile of filth. The easiest way to avoid the overly-intimate is to avoid stories with shipping tags. A couple of absolutely brilliant could-be-an-actual-episode one-shot fanfics are Sunny Skies All Day Long and My Faithful Student (though I personally prefer the former over the latter, they are written by the same author who feels the latter is better).

Now, as for a series fanfic, I quite enjoy reading this little number. It breaks ALL the rules. Shatters them. It looks like it should have everything that would make it as bad as most Sonic fanfics. How does a blatant self-insert OC former-human-now-unicorn with unique abilities, cigarettes, and a smart phone sound? How about him becoming fast friends with the mane 6 and close friends with Princess Luna (no, not quite *that* close...but almost)?
Somehow this guy pulls off a story like that and makes it hilarious and it still has a serious overarching storyline. It's So Meta, Even This Acronym. It knows when and when not to take itself seriously. Everything has a rhyme and reason, every action with real, lasting consequences. I was going to go on some more, then I remembered this post pretty much covered it. If a fic is rated 5 stars and has nearly 700 comments on it on EqD, it has to have done something right.

Also, Falllout: Equestria. There IS a reason why the EqD comments page for it got maxed out at 5000 comments. They had to give the story a second post to continue comments. Not only is the story series extensive, it has an equally extensive collection of fan-made stories to add to it, many with long-running series of their own. How epic does a fanfic have to be to spawn fanfics of fanfics (and fanfics of fanfics of fanfics) that the original author accepts as part of the storyverse? It's probably the only series I think could warrant the creation of a 7-star tag, since the 6-star tags are granted to stories that are almost unanimously voted 5-stars and have people vouching for their excellence in the comments.

Ion Storm I like Mogu's limefics and Spreading Your Wings and Hers.
  88. Daniel G.
Daniel G. Good read, I enjoyed it. I think it's also worth mentioning the way the has managed to incorporate rather tense dilemmas and even mortally dangerous situations without losing its innocent "friendship is magic" theme. That takes skill.

Oh, and I thought for sure it was common knowledge by now that Fluttershy is best pony. Pinkie Pie is #2.
  89. Cedric Bale
Cedric Bale I LOVED Past Sins. But I still wouldn't recommend it to someone who has a negative view of fanfiction in general, because people's opinions of it are incredibly polarized. Everyone either loves it or loathes it, nobody thinks it's just 'alright'. I'd stick to recommending Progress, as BHHammy said. It's funny, and it's got that episodic feel to it, which people who like the show but haven't gotten into fanfiction would probably appreciate.

  91. Mrs. Cake
Mrs. Cake Just don't read Cupcakes, especially if you work in a bakery, like I do. I stupidly read Cupcakes RIGHT before going to work, and I was suspiciously terrified of all the cupcakes for the rest of the day. WHY DO EVERYBODY THIS SHOW

Why the sudden surge of interest in this show?
I DON'T MY LITTLE PONY FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC BECAUSE OF THE MASS UP FANBASE

I'm beginning to have doubts about the My Little Pony fandom now, because of the massive influx of new community members.
THIS DON'T NEED THIS SHOW LOVE FROM ANYBODY

I... I'm not sure about this one -translator
I SICK OF BRONIES TELLING ME TO JOIN THE HERD

I was a self-styled "Brony" before the term even existed. Now they're telling ME to "Join the herd". The nerve!

Cliff_Forster I actually watched the first complete episode by myself on youtube late last night. The quality of the animation is nice, the adventure story line is a surprise, but ultimately, I just don't get it

I'm not a hater though. What grown men do in the comfort of their own home is their own deal. That said, I still plan on putting it in front of my daughter to see how she takes to it.
