AMD Continues Shift Away From Megahertz Race

As previously touched on in a news item I posted yesterday. AMD has highlighted the fact that it will use a “performance-power rating” to name its embedded Geode line of processors, resulting in names that have higher numbers than the clock rating expressed in megahertz.

The chipmaker said Monday that it has it contracted with an Austin, Texas, benchmarking services company to deliver a broader range of performance metrics than pure megahertz. The benchmarks were developed by Synchromesh Computing Inc. to measure the arithmetic, floating point, and graphics processors, as well performance contributions from instructions dedicated to media processing, cache size, the internal bus, and other elements that affect overall performance.

csimon interesting ...so even more extreme performance ratings!

RWB WTF is their geode line of processors? GEODE?! I am all confused about this naming scheme, it looks like it says theya re running at only 1 to 6 watts from the @1W and stuff in the name....

I went out my way to post those links in the news post explaining what the geode line was, just to stop someone asking what you just did.;)

The Geode line of processors are a range of X86 compatible chips that were purchased by AMD last year. The chips are aimed at low power embedded systems mainly. So the Geode line is essentially CPU's and companion chips for use in applications like set-top box's etc. Or at least something to that effect. :)
