Doom 3 For Linux Released

Timothee Besset has announced the release of the Linux client/server binaries for Doom 3. A Linux Doom 3 page has been setup with installation instructions and a FAQ.

Currently, the game will not run correctly on ATI cards using the fglrx driver. However, the ATI developers are working on new driver releases, and eventually the game will be supported. A demo has also been released if you haven’t had a chance to purchase the retail edition yet.

But if you have ATI the drivers for linux suck, just another reason why linux will fail.

Or, if you're like me, you'll buy nVidia in the next generation of graphics cards. ATI hasn't released any 64bit Linux drivers at all and only partial 32bit drivers (multimedia functions for the All in Wonder series cards like mine aren't supported). Only recently have they deigned to release a 64-bit beta Windows driver.

x86-64 has been out for a year now, and nVidia has been on the ball with having drivers available for Linux and Windows in both 32bit and 64bit flavors. Now that the 6xxx series is competitive with the x800's, I'll be willing to sacrifice a few FPS on select benchmarks for hardware-accelerated Linux.
