Microsoft Takes Windows Update Away From The Pirates

It has been reported that Microsoft will not only make it a lot harder for SP2 to work on pirated versions of Windows XP, but the software giant will also put similar restrictions on their soon to be released updated version of Windows Update.

SouL2kEEp has just reported that Windows Update 5 has also been taken down the same path as Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. Neowin has a screen shot of the message that claims an invalid Product ID is being used.

I also did read that microsoft would allow pirated versions to update, because they give the update a big importance (because they know the bugs and holes they have, and want the system to be protected against such worms like those "surfing" the net right now... and that has a lot of sense)

Hope this is confirmed and the blacklists don't stop users to win-update.

(btw...... there are many blacklist removers........
5 Jul 2004 ~ 5:57am Shorty Windows Update definitely does not allow pirated keys.

I ran a test for myself just to be sure. If you are using a hijacked corporate key, you are not going to be able to use Windows Update Ver.5.

If you aren't legit, time to find a different OS. I've got legit MSDN XP's but this is going to get interesting for sure..

People shouldn't moan about free software. If people want hassle free functionality, then they should buy the software legally. Then people won't have any problems. Simple. Microsoft is doing nothing wrong by trying to stop their software being pirated. They invest money into creating software, if you want that software you pay for it.

That wasn't directed at you Jengo, or anyone in particular for that matter. I was just expressing my opinion.

SP2 will not work on 90% of the current pirate keys in circulation. At least it doesn't currently. I have no reason to think the same won't apply for Windows Update. It's been the same in the past.

There will be new patchs and new keygens to combat the new MS security policies for sure. I am NOT in any way or form supporting the use of pirated software but rather suggesting that this is a cat and mouse game that thousands of hackers seem to enjoy fighting for free. They view MS as a the evil empire. As long as there is an active army of thousands of hackers working non-stop world wide to defeat the new MS security the game wil continue forever. New security. New patch's and new keygens. The game never ends.

Exactly. It's all about the keygens. But even as we speak, new ones which can generate typically non-blacklisted PID tags are already starting to surface. Cat and mouse game indeed.
